NY painted by Littlelle | Day 5 - Trendy and multicultural districts

Este foi um dia muito preenchido por diversos bairros da cidade, que justificavam um dia completo para cada um deles, a fim de serem devidamente explorados. No entanto, dada a limitação de tempo, para ficar com uma primeira impressão de todos, agrupei-os no mesmo dia. Prepara-te para andar!

This was a very busy day with several city districts, which justified a full day for each one, in order to be properly explored. However, given the time constraint, to get a first impression of all, I grouped them all in the same day. Get ready to walk!

Comecei assim o dia pelas galerias de arte do bairro de Chelsea que foram uma boa surpresa! Quando dei por mim, dei de caras com obras de Banksy, Mr. Brainwash ou Warhol na Galeria Taglialatella (231 10th Av.). As galerias de arte são uma boa forma para explorar o meio artístico alternativo de Nova Iorque (NY), para além dos grandes museus.

I started the day by the art galleries of Chelsea, which were such a good surprise! When I realized, I was in front of artworks from Banksy, Mr. Brainwash or Warhol at Taglialatella Galery (231 10th Av.). The art galleries are a good way to explore the alternative artistic scene of New York (NY), beyond the big museums.

Segui depois pelo High Line, um parque urbano suspenso que acompanha uma antiga linha férrea inactiva, desde a 10ª Av., passando pelo Meatpacking District e 30s West. Ao longo do seu percurso, vamo-nos deparando com várias obras de arte urbana, além de vista para o Rio Hudson.

Next, I went to the High Line, a hanged urban park that follows an old inactive railway line, that goes from the 10th Av., through the Meatpacking District and 30s West. Along the way, we come across many urban artworks, as well as the view of the Hudson River.

Almocei no Chelsea Market (75 9Th Av.), um mercado localizado na antiga fábrica Nabisco, que entra no espírito alternativo e artístico deste bairro, com vários restaurantes com comida bastante diversificada e lojas alternativas. Recomendo!

I had lunch at Chelsea Market (75 9Th Av.), a market located at the old Nabisco factory, that goes into the alternative and artistic spirit of this district, having many different restaurants with a wide range of different kinds of food and trendy shops. I truly recommend it!

Durante a tarde dirigi-me para Lower East Side, a fim de explorar os bairros étnicos com pequenas comunidades que mantêm os costumes, a gastronomia e religião dos imigrantes que aí se instalaram no final do século XIX.

During the afternoon, I went to Lower East Side, in order to explore the ethnic neighborhoods, with small communities that maintain the customs, gastronomy and religion of the immigrants who settled down there in the late nineteenth century.

Comecei por explorar o bairro de origem italiana, conhecido como Little Italy, para relembrar os tempos da máfia retratados no filme Padrinho. No entanto, infelizmente esta zona italiana está a ser absorvida pelo bairro vizinho da ChinaTown, encontrando-se reduzida às ruas Mulberry e Grand. 

I stated to explore the Italian neighborhood, known as Little Italy, to remember the mafia times portrayed in the movie “The Godfather”. However, unfortunately, this Italian zone is being absorbed by its close neighborhood of ChinaTown, being reduced to Mulberry and Grand streets.

ChinaTown é o maior bairro étnico de NY, o qual, da parte que pude ver, não achei nada de especial. Apresenta lojas e mercados chineses e alguns templos que não tive oportunidade de ver. 

ChinaTown is the biggest ethnic neighborhood, of NY, which, from what I could see, I didn’t find it that special. It features Chinese shops and markets and a few temples, which I didn’t have the opportunity to see.

Parei para tomar café no Two Hands, sítio agradável, com decoração engraçada e cheio de good vibes. Não te esqueças, a partir do momento em que te sentas, pagas gorjeta!

I stopped to drink coffee at Two Hands Café, a nice place, with a cute decor full of good vibes. And don’t forget that once you sit, you tip!

Neste Lower East Side de Manhattan aproveitei também para dar um pulinho à Orchard Street, para ver as famosas escadas de ferro exteriores que surgem em tantos filmes.

At this Lower East Side of Manhattan I also took a moment to stroll to the Orchard Street to see the famous iron stairways that appear as a scenario in so many movies.

O lanche foi tomado na requintada Ladurée, no adjacente bairro Soho (South of Houston), antigo bairro industrial, agora chamariz de arte e arquitectura neoclássico revivalista. Este bairro é caracterizado pelos clássicos prédios de ferro forjado que albergam agora inúmeras lojas de design e boutiques. É também um passeio cosmopolita e agradável.

The teatime was passed at the exquisite Ladurée, in the adjoining neighborhood Soho (South of Houston), former industrial district, now a decoy of neoclassical revivalist art and architecture. This neighborhood is characterized by its classic wrought-iron buildings that now house innumerous design shops and boutiques. It’s also a pleasant and cosmopolitan walk.

O dia terminou a saborear música Jazz ao vivo, ao gosto de Woody Allen, num restaurante intimista em Greenwich Village, uma zona universitária e boémia da cidade. Pelo caminho passei pelo Washington Square Park que evidencia um monumento semelhante ao Arco do Triunfo de Paris. É uma zona agradável, que apela mesmo para sentar, relaxar e ficar a observar o meio envolvente e as pessoas que por ali passam e fazem as suas vidas.

The day ended up enjoying live jazz music, just like Woody Allen style, in an intimate restaurant in Greenwich Village, a university and bohemian area of the city. On the way, I passed by Washington Square Park that shows a monument similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It’s a nice area, which really appeals to us to sit down, relax and watch the surroundings and the people who pass by and make their lives.
