"Dissecação/Dissection" at Museu da Eletricidade in Lisbon (2014)

Mostly due to his capacity to convey sensitivity through the faces, which in a rude but meticulous way are symbolically carved or excavated in the walls of each place.

The face of the fado singer starts from the ground and rises through the wall and it includes an artifice that allows to shed tears when it rains, in a metaphorical allusion to the tears that the she used to shed whenever she sang fado. This is the first work that Vhils did in Portuguese sidewalk and he had the collaboration of Lisbon pavers.

Local: Alfama, Lisboa.

In 2014, Vhils was invited to do an intervention at the Teather D. Maria II in order to honor the space that was recovered after the fire on 2nd December, 1964. When we walk into the Great Hall of the Theater it’s possible to see carved on its walls the faces of four great actresses of the Portuguese theater: Amélia Rey-Colaço, Beatriz Costa, Palmira Bastos and Laura Alves. What could be a visual shock is actually an interesting cross of styles between urban art and the classic elegance of the great hall.

Local: Teatro D. Maria II no Rossio, Lisboa

There are many outstanding artworks by this Portuguese artist to find out there, from London to Moscow, New York, Bogota or Medellin. To travel to the other side of the world and to find a masterpiece of quality created by a Portuguese is something to be proud of. To conclude, here are some of his artworks which I am very curious to see in Hong Kong.

Enjoy*

Street Art in Portugal

During my trips I always try to look for the best things that a place has to offer, trying to combine natural, cultural and artistic landscapes from every country, in order to absorb the most genuine background and its cultural beauty. I like to search, specifically, for artistic expressions, either in buildings’ architecture, doors or windows, or either in museums, where I like to contemplate masterpieces and also get to know the local painters, but specially, it gives me a great pleasure wandering in the streets and get astonished with big murals or just little urban art details. Some spaces are in fact real open sky galleries, and those murals give color and life to the history of each local.

This is a little pleasure that I try to get from every trip, and this allowed me to collect photos that immortalized various urban artwork, which include different techniques and that send several messages, such as social, political or economic criticisms, which I intend to share in this blog also. Having said that, I am starting with a publication of some street art examples in Portugal, which I have found from north to south of our little, but surprisingly beautiful country.

Então, vamos viajar pelas paredes de portugal de norte a sul do país...
Let’s travel through the walls of Portugal, from north to the south of the country...
