Unpleasant surprises while travelling

Bem, aqui ficam algumas situações que me sucederam a mim e a muitas outras pessoas, imagino eu…

Traveling is more than just knowing new cultures or contemplating beautiful landscapes. It's to live, to experiment, to make new learnings informally. Many personal and social skills are not learned in school, but are rather developed throughout life. So travelling is a fertile ground to develop new skills or discover features that you didn't even know you had. Possibly they were submerged in the "other side of the iceberg"! It's often after adversities that growth comes. Yes, when you are travelling unpleasant surprises can arise, even when you have your trip planned to the millimeter. You are overwhelmed by the feeling that you don't control anything in your life, which is amplified when you are away from home and from your safe haven. In these situations, you have to think about your resources in order to solve the problem. It takes a bit of flexibility, finding the balance between drama and reason, a hint of humor, accepting that sometimes it's necessary to ask for help from other people or entities, and breathing in a gentle and kind way.

Well, here are some situations that have happened to me and to many other people, I suppose...

Disappointed expectations with accomodation

The classic: When you arrive at the accommodation and the photos you saw on internet when you made the reservation, don't correspond to reality.

You should leave comments with your opinion on the platform where you made the reservation, you will help other people not to be "deceived".

Isto aconteceu-me em Marraquexe.

Arrive at the hotel and you don't have a room available

Book a hotel and when you arrive to check in, they tell you that there is no room available for you. This happened to me in Marrakesh. I had just arrived in the city at dusk, and what was my astonishment when after being greeted, with all the care and with Moroccan tea, I am told that the hotel is full. The hotel arranged for us an alternative, but the situation was very annoying. Again, I recommend you to leave comments online.

Overbooking

You get to the airport, you check in, pass the control and go to the duty free. Suddenly you hear your name being called, asking you to go immediately to the boarding gate ... But it's still 1:30 until the boarding time! Weird…. When you arrive you realize that there is an overbooking and you were the "happy" contemplated to embark on another flight. You should think about the conditions they offer you, in terms of proposed alternative flight schedules and economic compensation. If you decide to agree to board the next flight, ask to keep the luggage tag with you. When this situation happened to me, the collaborator of the airport of Zagreb, who was in charge of carrying out all the necessary procedures, got the overbooking boarding passes and the luggage tag with him. The employee kept putting a new tag in the bag, but between stopovers and delays, the bag was lost and I just had the new tag, not knowing what had happened to the bag.

Your luggage is not delivered at the airport. It's lost!

When this happens, you should immediately go to the airport's lost and found service in order to communicate the absence of the bag and start the searching process. Hence the labels that give you at check in are so important. If for some reason you do not follow this procedure, report the situation as soon as possible to the airline company. As a rule, when there are stopovers, you must report the loss or damage to the last company you flew with. It's in charge of reimbursing you for what you need. In the case of TAP, they will reimburse goods that they need in the suitcase if it is lost on the outward journey. The same does not apply if it happens on the return trip home. Lufhansa has another policy. It reimburses 100% of the value of cosmetics, hygiene products and underwear and 50% in the case of clothing and footwear. If you go through a similar situation, it is best to contact your airline company. My luggage appeared after 1 week, and was delivered to the nearest bus station of my residence.

A few tips for your trips

- Do not exchange money at the airport or exchange the minimum necessary. Usually rates are much higher.

- If you have checked-in baggage, get a suitcase of a strong color, put a label with your contact details and identifying elements (e.g. stickers or colored belts). Black bags are very hard to find when they get lost. It's like finding a needle in the haystack.

- Always take with you on the plane medicines you need, valuable goods (money, cards, documents and chargers and a change of clothes. You never know what might happen during your flight.

- Take a copy of your documents (passport and citizen's card). You can always leave the passport stored in the hotel and walk with a copy.

- Stay in touch with family and friends. So, keep a sense of security in who stayed at home and in your heart.
