O Japão, conhecido como o país do sol nascente, tem na sua bandeira o Hinomaru, o círculo do Sol. É efectivamente um país radiante e fascinante, com uma cultura intrinsecamente embrenhada e cheia de contrastes. Apesar de ser um país pequeno, possui a terceira maior economia do mundo, principalmente devido à tecnologia, parecendo dar aos seus habitantes uma boa qualidade de vida.

Japan, known as the country of the rising sun, has on its flag the Hinomaru, the circle of the sun. Indeed it’s a radiant and fascinating country, with a culture that is intrinsically entangled and full of contrasts. Despite being a small country, it has the third largest economy in the world, mainly due to technology, seeming to give its inhabitants a good quality of life.

A educação e o trabalho são culturalmente muito valorizados. As crianças durante as atividades escolares usam uma farda tipo marinheiro, tal como nos desenhos animados da Sailor Moon! No mundo do trabalho existem profissões estranhas como empurrador de pessoas para dentro do metro. Menos positivo, é o facto de haver pessoas que se matam literalmente a trabalhar, sendo o Karoshi (morte súbita por excesso de trabalho) e o Karojisatsu (suicídio provocado por condições stressantes de trabalho) socialmente aceites!

Education and work are culturally highly valued. During school activities, children wear an uniform, just like the Sailor Moon cartoons! In the world of work, there are weird professions like pushing people into the subway. Less positive is the fact that having people who kill themselves literally by working, being the Karoshi (sudden death from overwork) and the Karojisatsu (suicide due to stressful work conditions) socially accepted!

Em contrapartida, a adoção de um estilo de vida saudável parece fazer parte da cultura nipónica, quer pela gastronomia, que é das mais saudáveis do mundo, quer pela prática de exercício físico. É habitual nas grandes cidades, as pessoas saírem do escritório e irem fazer exercício para os parques durante a sua hora de almoço.

On the other hand, the adoption of a healthy lifestyle seems to be part of the Japanese culture, whether by its gastronomy, which is one of the healthiest in the world, or by practicing physical exercise. Usually at the big cities, people get out of work to do some exercise in the parks during their lunch time.

As questões de saúde e higiene parecem ser especialmente importantes na cultura japonesa. Nada de entrar calçado em restaurantes tradicionais ou em provadores nas lojas, os sapatos ficam sempre à porta ou guardados em cacifos próprios! Quando as questões de higiene se juntam à mais alta tecnologia, isto resulta na utilização de sanitas elétricas, mesmo até em casas de banho públicas, em todo o lado! Então basicamente, as sanitas só não fazem as necessidades por ti! Apresentam o tampo quentinho e até dão música ambiente, caso seja essa a tua vontade. O tampo abre-se sozinho quando entras na casa de banho e a temperatura e potência da água são reguláveis através de comandos disponibilizados. Não te preocupes que algumas apresentam livro de instruções!

Health and hygiene issues seem to be especially important in the Japanese culture. No shoes are allowed in traditional restaurants or dressers in the stores, shoes are always kept at the door or in proper lockers! When the hygiene issues join the highest technology, this results in the use of electric toilets, even in public toilets, everywhere! Basically the toilets just do not make the needs for you! They present the warm topping and they even give out ambient music, if that is your will. The lid opens on its own when you enter the bathroom and the water temperature and power can be adjusted by the supplied controls. Don’t worry, some have an instruction book!

No geral as pessoas são muito simpáticas e atenciosas, e apesar de não falarem maioritariamente inglês, recebem os turistas de forma bastante acolhedora. Parece ser um povo muito educado, disciplinado e com  respeito pelo outro. O termo Haji Shirazu, que pode ser traduzido como “não ter vergonha na cara”, é considerado uma acusação grave no Japão. Por isso, a maioria da população nipónica tem a preocupação de manter uma boa conduta e não violar regras sociais.

Overall the people are very friendly and gracious, although most of them do not speak English, they welcome tourists in a very kind way. They seem to be a very polite, disciplined people with respect for each other. The expression Haji Shirazu, which can be translated as having no shame is considered as a serious charge in Japan. So, most of the Japanese people are concerned with maintaining a good conduct and not violating the social rules.

Em contraste com a evolução tecnológica, que é sempre de última geração, é um povo bastante conservador e patriota na manutenção da língua e dos costumes. Efetivamente, percebe-se que apesar dos japoneses absorverem as tendências mundiais, acrescentam às mesmas as suas características nipónicas, o que evita que o Japão perca a sua verdadeira essência. Apesar de ser uma cultura bastante diferente da europeia, a sua simpatia e forma de estar é contagiante, eu já quase que de forma automática fazia a tradicional vénia de cumprimento e agradecimento.

In contrast to technological evolution, which is always the latest generation, they are very conservative and patriotic people in the maintenance of language and customs. Indeed, it is perceived that although the Japanese absorbs the world trends, they add to them their Japanese characteristics, which prevents Japan from losing its true essence. Despite being a culture quite different from European, their empathy and attitude are contagious, I almost automatically made the traditional bonding to compliment or to thanks.

Em oposição a esta disciplina e seriedade, as ruas parecem saídas de um filme de anime ou jogo da Nintendo! São bastante animadas com imensos placards, cujos anúncios apresentam sempre um desenho animado, seja para fazer publicidade, dar uma indicação ou comunicar uma regra. Existem salões de jogos e lojas em cada esquina, consumismo no seu máximo!

In opposition to this discipline and seriousness, the streets look like an anime movie or Nintendo game! They are very lively with huge placards, whose ads always present a cartoon, whether to advertise, give an indication or communicate a rule. There are game rooms and shops at every corner, consumerism at its maximum!

Nos 8 dias em que lá estive passou um tufão, ocorreram vários terramotos e um vulcão decidiu entrar em atividade! Em contrapartida assisti a dois festivais sagrados e aprendi imensas coisas sobre a cultura japonesa! O balanço foi verdadeiramente positivo! Penso que se não fosse esta agitação natural, seria um país onde iria gostar de viver!

In the 8 days that I was there a typhoon passed, several earthquakes occurred and a volcano decided to take action! In contrast I attended two sacred festivals and learned lots of things about Japanese culture! The balance was truly positive! I think if it were not for this natural turmoil, it would be a country where I would enjoy living!

Urban paradises

A Primavera está a chegar e traz consigo o bom tempo. Vêm as andorinhas, as flores começam a desabrochar e o nosso instinto leva-nos a começar a procurar os primeiros raios de sol, que nesta altura sabem tão bem. As cidades e os campos ficam floridos, ganhando uma outra cor e alegria. Por esta altura o leque de escolhas para passeios e viagens diversifica-se, ganhando outra proporção. Podemos optar por ir dar um passeio à beira mar, passar um fim de semana num parque natural, visitar cidades conhecidas pelo gosto e cuidado com as flores, como Amesterdão, ou fazer um picnic num jardim, sei lá, tanta coisa...

Spring is coming and brings with it the nice weather. The swallows come, the flowers begin to bloom, and our instinct leads us to start looking for the first rays of the sun, which feels so good. The cities and fields blossom, gaining another color and joy. By this time the range of choices for tours and trips is diversified, gaining another proportion. We can choose to go for a walk by the sea, spend a weekend in a natural park, visit cities known for the taste and care with flowers, as Amsterdam, or have a picnic in a garden, I don’t know, so many things that we can do...

Eu gosto particularmente de passear pelos jardins ou parques que nesta altura ganham uma outra dinâmica, com pessoas a passear, a fazer exercício, passear o seu Bobby, ler o jornal, fazer Yoga, tirar fotografias, um conjunto de coisas que sabem bem, cada uma à sua maneira são agradáveis, relaxantes e económicas... Cada um com o seu hobby e cada cidade com o seu parque. A existência de espaços verdes no coração das cidades são fundamentais para a qualidade de vida dos seus habitantes, por isso em grande parte das viagens que tenho feito a grandes metrópoles, faço questão de visitar os seus pulmões verdes e perceber como os locais ocupam os seus tempos livres. Assim, para esta primavera, deixo-vos algumas ideias para explorar 6 fantásticos parques.

I especially like to stroll through the gardens or parks, that by this time,  gain another dynamic, with people strolling, exercising, walking their Bobby, reading the newspaper, doing Yoga, taking pictures, a set of things which each one on its own way is pleasant, relaxing and economical... Each person with their hobby and each city with its park. The existence of green spaces at the heart of the cities are essential to the quality of life of their inhabitants, so in most of the trips that I do to some big metropolis, I have to visit their green lungs and realize how the locals occupy their free time. So, for this spring I leave you with some ideas to explore 6 amazing parks.

Central Park, New York

O Central Park, inaugurado em 1857, possui cerca de 341 hectares, com 26000 árvores, mais de 9000 bancos, 36 pontes, 29 esculturas, 21 parques desportivos, 7 lagos, 1 castelo e 1 jardim zoológico. Um verdadeiro oásis cheio de muitas opções entre os arranha-céus de Manhattan! Para além de ser um lugar relaxante no meio da frenética cidade de NY, este parque é também um local de oferta cultural, com espetáculos de teatro, arte ou simplesmente música  interpretada por artistas de rua. A caminhada pelo parque é bastante agradável, podemos apreciar os habituais passeios dos locais a fazer jogging, a passear os cães, ou ler o jornal, etc. Eu gostei de toda a envolvência, com destaque para o Castelo Belvedere que se encontra situado no topo de uma rocha natural, apresentando do seu terraço uma bonita vista para o parque e para a cidade. A Bethesda Terrace and Fountain é outro ponto de interesse obrigatório. Entre as 29 estátuas existentes no parque, as que mais gostei foram a estátua da Alice no País das Maravilhas e do Romeu e Julieta, próxima do Teatro Delacorte. Perto do MET há um obelisco. Para os mais desportistas, existem vários campos ao seu dispor. Há ainda o clássico passeio de barco pelos lagos que refletem os arranha-céus da cidade.

Central Park, opened in 1857, has around 341 ha, with 26000 trees, more than 9000 benches, 36 bridges, 29 sculptures, 21 sport parks, 7 lakes, 1 castle and 1 zoo. A true oasis surrounded by skyscrapers! In addition of being a quite relaxing space in the middle of the frenetic city of New York, this park is also a place with cultural offer, such as theater, art or simply music by street performers. Walking around the park is quite pleasant, to observe the usual walks from the locals, doing some jogging, walking their dogs or reading the newspaper, etc. I liked all the surroundings especially the Belvedere Castle, located at the top of a natural rock, which presents in its terrace a beautiful view to the park and the city. The Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is another must see point. Between the 29 sculptures, I liked the statue of Alice in Wonderland and Romeo and Juliet near the Delacorte Theatre. There’s an obelisk near the MET Museum. To the sporty people there are many sports camps. It is also possible to do the classic boat ride through the lakes that reflects the city's skyscrapers.

Parque del Buen Retiro, Madrid

Este parque amoroso localizado no coração de Madrid apresenta 125 hectares, mais de 15.000 árvores, esculturas e fontes notáveis, sendo um centro de lazer, cultura e desporto. Apresenta um grande lago, chamado Estanque Grande, onde é possível realizar passeios de barco a remos e desfrutar do sol madrileno. Para os mais desajeitados como eu, poderá ser uma verdadeira aventura não bater contra os restantes barcos ou ir parar de baixo de uma fonte! O preço do aluguer do barco varia entre 5,80€ e 7,50€, funcionando das 10h-17h30 ou 10h-20h30 consoante a época do ano. A Casa de Velázquez e o Palácio de Cristal, para além de impressionarem pela sua arquitetura, albergam exposições temporárias do Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. A Rosaleda apresenta cerca de 4000 exemplares de rosas de várias cores, parecendo um recanto de maravilhas! É lindíssimo quando as roseiras se encontram floridas! O Parterre apresenta algumas das árvores mais antigas de Madrid, com cerca de 400 anos. Existem cafés e animação de rua para crianças, vendo-se por isso muitas famílias e pessoas de todas as idades. Quando o calor aperta, é o sítio ideal para dormir a famosa siesta espanhola à sombra arvoredo.

This lovely park located at the heart of Madrid has 125 ha, more than 15.000 trees, impressive sculptures and fountains, being a center of leisure, culture and sports. It features a huge lake, called Estanque Grande, where it’s possible to take rowing tours and enjoy the Madrilenian sun. For the more clumsy ones like me, it could be a real adventure not to hit the remaining boats or to stop underneath a fountain! The price of the boat rental varies between € 5.80 and € 7.50, running from 10h-17h30 or 10h-20h30 depending on the season. The Velázquez House and the Crystal Palace, besides of being impressive by its architecture, they host temporary exhibitions of the National Museum of Reina Sofía Art Center. The Rosaleda displays about 4000 roses of several colors, looking like a nook of wonders! It is beautiful when the roses are flowering! The Parterre features some of the oldest trees in Madrid, with about 400 years old. There are cafes and street entertainment for children, seeing so many families and people of all ages. When it starts getting hotter, it is the ideal place to sleep the famous Spanish siesta in the shady grove.

Parece impossível, mas efetivamente é maior que o Central Park de NY, sendo um dos maiores da Europa e do mundo, com uma área de 4,17 km². Foi criado em 1789 com um estilo inglês, daí a proveniência do seu nome. Sendo um dos maiores parques do mundo, oferece várias atividades de lazer, disponibilizando uma rede de 78 km de trilhos para jogging. Do Monopteros, situado no topo de uma colina, é possível ter uma bonita vista para o skyline da cidade de Munique. Existe um salão de chá japonês e uma Torre Chinesa com 25 metros de altura. O parque tem vários lagos e riachos, incluindo mesmo um canal artificial para a prática de surf, que nem nos dias mais frios afasta os praticantes deste desporto.

It seems impossible, but it’s actually larger than Central Park in NY, being one of the largest in Europe and the world, with an area of 4.17 km². It was created in 1789 with an English style, hence the provenance of its name. As one of the biggest parks all over the world, it offers many leisure activities, providing a network of 78 km of jogging trails. From the Monopteros, located on the top of a hill, it’s possible to see a beautiful view to the skyline of Munich. There is a Japanese Teahouse and one Chinese Tower with 25 meters in height. The park has several lakes and streams, including an artificial channel for surfing, which even on cooler days does not set away practitioners of this sport.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Fui ao Brooklyn Botanic Garden nomeadamente para conhecer o seu jardim japonês, um dos jardins mais antigos e mais visitados fora do Japão. Na época das cerejeiras em flor é igualmente comemorada a tradição japonesa do Sakura Matsuri, o festival das cerejeiras em flor, havendo um grande campo inteiramente dedicado a essa árvore. Para fazer jus ao nome, este jardim fundado em 1910, possui aproximadamente 21 hectares e uma grande diversidade de plantas e flores. Para além das cerejeiras, gostei bastante da vasta coleção de tulipas e magnólias. Entre as várias áreas a explorar, o jardim apresenta uma estufa com plantas características de várias zonas climáticas do mundo, o Museu do Bonsai, um lago com nenúfares e um hall para exposições de arte com temáticas temporárias associadas ao jardim.

I went to Brooklyn Botanic Garden, namely to get to know the Japanese garden, one of the most ancient and visited gardens outside Japan. On the cherry blossom season it’s also celebrated the Japanese tradition of Sakura Matsuri, the festival of cherry blossoms, with a large field entirely dedicated to this tree. To live up to its name, this garden, founded in 1910, has approximately 21 hectares and a great diversity of plants and flowers. Apart from the cherry trees, I quite enjoyed the vast collection of tulips and magnolias. Among the various areas to explore, the garden features a greenhouse with plants characteristic of various climatic zones of the world, the Bonsai Museum, a lake with water lilies and a hall for temporary art exhibits associated with the garden.

Como a maioria das atracões em Paris, também este jardim é efetivamente um local charmoso, entre o Museu do Louvre e a Praça da Concórdia, com o Champs-Élysées e a Torre Eiffel no horizonte. É possível realizar um bonito passeio a observar a paisagem parisiense, lado a lado com o Rio Sena e estátuas de Rodin, passando por alguns lagos e fontes, à beira dos quais nos podemos sentar e simplesmente desfrutar da paisagem ao redor.

As most of the attractions in Paris, also this garden is a charming place, between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde, with the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower on the horizon. It is possible to take a beautiful walk to observe the Parisian landscape, side by side with the Seine River and Rodin statues, passing by some lakes and fountains, to the edge of which we can sit and simply enjoy the surrounding landscape.

É o maior parque da cidade, com uma área de 76 hectares, onde podes ser surpreendido com diferentes animais a passear livremente. Concebido no século XVII, como parque para banhos privativo de Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, é agora um centro cultural, artístico e de lazer reconhecido na Polónia, apresentando inúmeras estátuas e um teatro. No centro do parque existe um lago que reflete nas suas margens o Palácio Łazienki. É possível dar uma volta de barco e fazer uma descontraída caminhada pelos seus campos.

It’s the biggest park of the city, with an area of 76 ha, where you can be surprised by different kind of animals to walk freely. Designed in the 17^th century, as a private bathing park of Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, it’s now a recognized cultural, artistic and leisure center in Poland, featuring numerous statues and a theater. In the center of the park there is a lake that reflects on its banks the Łazienki Palace. It is possible to take a boat trip and take a leisurely walk through its fields.
