Singapore Botanic Gardens

Fundado em 1859, este jardim com mais de 150 anos de história, é considerado um dos jardins botânicos mais bonitos do Sudeste Asiático. Apresenta 60 000 plantas! Entre as cerca de 10 000 espécies, encontras flores e plantas bem diferentes. Ao passeares pelo jardim, com cerca de 82 ha, vais encontrar uma paisagem tropical, por vezes parece que estás no cenário do Jurassic Park. Podes passear por diversas atrações como o Vale das Palmeiras com 220 espécies de palmeiras, o Jardim da Cura com 500 espécies de plantas curativas, Floresta Tropical, Jardim do Gengibre com mais de 550 tipos de gengibre, 3 lagos, coreto, esculturas. 

Established in 1859, this garden with more than 150 years of history, is considered one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Southeast Asia. Features 60,000 plants! Among the approximately 10 000 species, you will find very different flowers and plants. Strolling through the garden, with about 82 ha, you will find a tropical landscape, sometimes it seems that you are in a scene of Jurassic Park. You can stroll through several spaces such as the Palm Valley with 220 species of palm trees, the Healing Garden with 500 species of healing plants, the Rain Forest, the Ginger Garden with more than 550 types of ginger, 3 lakes, a bandstand and sculptures.

O destaque vai para a sua coleção de orquídeas no National Orchid Garden, que apresenta mais de 1000 espécies diferentes de orquídeas e 2000 híbridas. É considerado património mundial pela Unesco, sendo o único jardim botânico tropical que conta da lista da Unesco. Neste jardim, para além do National Orchid Garden, vais encontrar vários espaços dedicados a esta flor, nomeadamente à híbrida Vanda Miss Joaquim, orquídea de cor rosa, violeta e alaranjado, cujas cores vibrantes e resiliência, representam a riqueza e mistura cultural de Singapura, tendo sido por isso eleita como flor nacional. Existe também um jardim de Orquídeas Vip, onde cada chefe de estado que visitou esta cidade-estado tem uma espécie de orquídea em sua honra. O jardim botânico disponibiliza aos seus visitantes restaurantes, uma mercearia, uma zona para realizar concertos sobre o Symphony Lake.  

The highlight goes to their collection of orchids at the National Orchid Garden, which features over 1000 different species of orchids and 2000 hybrids. It’s considered a UNESCO world heritage site, being the only tropical botanical garden on UNESCO list. In this garden, in addition to the National Orchid Garden, you will find many different spaces dedicated to this flower, namely the Vanda Miss Joaquim, an (a) hybrid pink, violet and orange orchid, whose vibrant colours and resilience represent the richness and cultural mix of Singapore, having therefore been elected as the national flower. There is also a Vip orchid garden, where every head of state who visited this city-state has a kind of orchid in his honor. The botanical garden offers its visitors restaurants, a grocery store, a concert area on the Symphony Lake.

Horário: Aberto diariamente das 5 da manhã até á meia-noite. O jardim das orquídeas está aberto das 8h30 às 19h.
Preço: A entrada no jardim é gratuita e a entrada no National Orchid Garden são 5 SGD.

Opening hours: Daily, from 5 am to midnight, The National Orchid Garden from 8.30 am to 7 pm daily

Price: The garden has free admission, with exception of the National Orchid Garden, where you have to pay 5 SGD.

Singapore, a city in a garden

Localizada no Sudeste Asiático, Singapura é uma cidade-estado moderna e cosmopolita, sendo reconhecida pela UNESCO pelo seu design criativo. Apesar de altamente densificada, os seus 5.5 milhões de habitantes, muitos com raízes malaias, chinesas e indianas, contam com uma cidade envolta não só em tecnologia, mas também em grandes espaços verdes que contribuem para o desenvolvimento sustentável da cidade, assim como para o bem-estar dos seus habitantes. 

Located in Southeast Asia, Singapore is a modern cosmopolitan city-state and is recognized by UNESCO as a creative design city. Although highly densified, its 5.5 million inhabitants, many with Malaysian, Chinese and Indian roots, have a city not only enveloped in technology but also in large green spaces that contribute to its sustainable development, as well as to the well-being of its inhabitants.

 A visão de tornar Singapura numa “cidade jardim” foi introduzida em 1967, pelo primeiro-ministro Lee Kuan Yew. Nos anos 70 foram implementadas várias políticas e campanhas para promover a plantação de árvores e criação de parques e espaços verdes. De 1975 a 2014, o número de parques passou de 13 para 330, com o aumento de área verde de 879 ha para 9 707 ha. Hoje para além dos grandes parques, a cidade contempla também 4 reservas naturais. Os jardins e parques da cidade integram a rotina e hábitos dos seus habitantes. São sítio refrescantes (considerando as temperaturas do clima equatorial), calmos e tranquilos para fugir à agitação da cidade, sendo comum observar as pessoas a fazer grandes pic nics, jogging ou a confraternizarem sentados numa manta na relva (apesar de haver lagartos gigantes a passear pelos relvados!!!). Tal como o restante cidade, os jardins estão limpíssimos. Os habitantes de Singapura são incentivados a estimar e a cuidar da natureza.

The vision of making Singapore a garden city was introduced in 1967, by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. In the 1970s, several policies and campaigns were implemented to promote tree planting and the creation of parks and green spaces. From 1975 to 2014, the number of parks increased from 13 to 330, with a green area increase from 879 ha to 9,707 ha. Today, in addition to the large parks, the city also has 4 nature reserves. The gardens and parks of the city integrate the routine and habits of its inhabitants. They are refreshing (considering the temperatures of the equatorial climate), calm and quiet to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and it’s common to observe people doing picnics, jogging or hang out together sitting on a blanket in the grass (although there are giant lizards that walk in the lawns !!!). Like the rest of the city, the gardens are very clean. Singaporeans are encouraged to cherish and care for nature.

Ao passeares pelos diferentes espaços da cidade para além dos jardins, também nas ruas, shoppings e aeroporto, vais ver vários canteiros e vasos com orquídeas, a flor nacional de Singapura. O clima equatorial quente e bastante húmido, ajuda a manter todos estes espaços verdes, os mesmos por sua vez, disponibilizam espaços mais frescos para os seus habitantes e visitantes. 

The orchid is the national flower of Singapore, strolling through different city spaces (streets, shopping malls, airport) you will see various flowerbeds and vases with orchids. The warm and very humid equatorial climate helps to keep all these spaces green, which in turn, provide fresh spaces for its inhabitants and visitors.

Por tudo isto, Singapura é hoje também conhecida como a cidade jardim, sendo umas das maiores “cidades verdes” do mundo. Penso que esta cidade-estado disponibiliza um modelo exemplar de desenvolvimento sustentável que poderia inspirar tantas outras cidades do mundo!

For all this, Singapore is now also known as the garden city, being one of the largest "green cities" in the world. I think that this city-state offers a model of sustainable development that could inspire so many other cities in the world!

Por achar este modelo de desenvolvimento tão interessante, apesar de haver muito a dizer sobre esta cidade-estado, as próximas publicações vão precisamente centrar-se em 3, dos seus mais de 300 fantásticos jardins, que espelham o seu design, tecnologia e a multiculturalidade: o Jardim Botânico, o Jardim Chinês e o Garden by the Bay. Se fores com tempo, aconselharia um dia para visitar cada um deles, são pequenos oásis no meio de Singapura. Acredita, não é minimamente tempo perdido.

This way, although there's a lot to be said about this city-state, the next posts will focus precisely on 3 of its more than 300 fantastic gardens, which mirror the city's design, technology and multiculturalism: the Botanic Garden, the Chinese Garden and Garden by the Bay. If you have time, you should take one day to visit each of them, they are small oases in the middle of Singapore. Believe me, it's not at all wasted time.
