Tropical Butterfly House in Ribatejo

If you admire the beauty of the butterflies and are one of those people who would like that they could rest in your hand, then Tropical Butterfly may be a different and interesting option to get to know a little more about the world of butterflies.

The Tropical Butterfly House belongs to the Environment Park of Santa Margarida, located in Santa Margarida da Coutada, near Constância.

The science center tries to recreate a tropical environment, warm and humid, to maintain a climate suitable for plants and butterflies in order to constitute the life cycle of some species of butterflies from some tropical areas of the planet, namely South America and Asia. It’s possible to observe and interact with butterflies from caterpillar, to chrysalis and butterfly phases. These flutter freely through the vegetation and sometimes even can rest on you! If you look carefully you can also find some butterfly eggs. Visiting during the mornings is the best time to find most butterflies fluttering. If you want to have the opportunity to photograph them in the tropical plants or watch them feeding themselves, the afternoon visit is more appropriated.

Dubai - Practical issues

Vale a pena conhecer as exuberâncias desta cidade.

If you think that it’s possible to walk by foot at the avenues of Dubai, forget it! The city is located in the middle of a desert and the sights to visit are in several poles of the city, there is no central zone.  It is such an extensive area that it is impossible to walk, as you usually do in European cities. Not to mention the heat that is felt, depending on the time of the year, it can go up to 48º. But no problem! There are several options, from bus with air-conditioned stops, subway, tram, taxi or limousine. In terms of public transport, I only had the experience of riding the subway (6 AEDs). The stations feature a futuristic architecture (2 lines, red and green, open from 6 am to 11 pm, there are different schedules during the Ramadan) Decorated according to the 4 elements, earth, fire, water and air, being not allowed to eat, drink or chew gum in the subway, being subject to a fine, if these rules are violated. There are specific carriages for women and children, which are properly marked, and a carriage for VIPs, a sort of first class. Although the subway offers carriages for women, there is no compulsory separation between men and women. In this carriage, if a man is seated and does not give his seat to a woman, there is an immediate pressure from the rest for the male to rise. A kind of Arabian power girl!
Taxis can be a good option to reach points where there is no metro. Given the abundance of oil, taxi ride in Dubai is not expensive. I emphasize that taxi drivers do not like to take small distances. It is nice to be able to enjoy the traffic in the city, namely on Sheikh Zayed Road, the main road that crosses the city from one end to the other, sometimes with about 6 lanes in each direction. There are several luxury cars and many jeeps for the desert.

Onde ficar? Where to stay?

It depends on the type of trip you want to do: beach, fun, culture or everything. As I only had 3 days and wanted to get to know the city I stayed in the Sheraton Hotel, located next to the Mall of the Emirates, where I had access to the subway. If you prefer to spend a few days relaxing on the beach, which should also be worth it, considering the quality of the hotels and the great temperature of the Arabian Sea, a resort will be the most suitable, but the prices are much higher. You have plenty of options, in Dubai there are hotels to suit all tastes.

Three day were enough to get to know the main attractions of the city, go to the desert and also to Abu Dhabi, capital city of United Arab Emirates, and to do some shopping, of course! If you want to spend more time shopping and relaxing on the beach, you will need more time.

Onde comer? Where to eat?

Just like the hotels, also the catering has a very diverse offer in terms of tastes and wallets. I chose to make the most of the meals at the malls, both at the Mall of the Emirates, and at the Dubai Mall, which offer a catering area ranging from the well-known fast food chains to restaurants serving regional and international food.

Clima | The weather

Although the media show sometimes some news related to sexism, difficulties with passports or health problems, Dubai seemed to me quite organized and safe for tourists, with a great investment from the United Arab Emirates in this sector. Maybe in the Souks area I felt a little more apprehensive, where there is more confusion and many street sellers, always wanting to foist something on tourists, but nothing special. In terms of health, it may be important to carry out some type of insurance, to guarantee some assistance, in case of necessity, since the health service is very expensive.

Dress Code

As an Islamic country, locals retain their habits and customs, which are also visible in the type of clothing. Most of the men are dressed in white with their typical headscarves and the burqa women, all in black, with only the eyes on display. Those that reveal the face, wear make-up and are quite beautiful. It is usual to see a man with more than one wife walking in the Mall. The tourists as I mentioned are very welcomed and although it is advised not to wear clothes that are too tight or with a low cut, tourists wearing skirts or shorts do not appear to be the object of attention or commentary, as can happen in other Islamic countries. Places of worship, like mosques, require more sober clothing. At the beach and hotel pools there are no restrictions on wearing bikinis. Dubai is quite westernized.

NY painted by Littlelle | Day 6 - Be New Yorker

The 6th day, the last but not the least I hope so, served to quicken the pace of the city and see some of the most spectacular towers of New York (NY), which feature an eclectic mix architecture, from a more classic style like Beaux-Arts to Art Deco. It is really worth to walk through the avenues and streets only to admire the Chrysler Building, the Central Station, the Chanin Building, the Daily News Building, the United Nations Building or just wander around the 5th Avenue. Walk upright to observe the top of the buildings it’s not enough, when we manage to look inside, the interiors are equally astonishing, displaying richly ornate entrances.

To continue with the rhythm of the city, I leave you with a suggestion to lunch a real American hot dog at Bryant Park. This park is adjacent to the NY Public Library, which no wonder it’s surrounded by skyscrapers from all sides. Passing through the public library, installed in a Beaux-Arts style building, is mandatory for those who enjoy historical culture and libraries.

In the afternoon, visiting the Natural History Museum (Central Park West and 79 St., open from 10am to 5.45pm; Nycity pass) is ideal for those who particularly like history, but is equally interesting to anyone, regardless of age. Upon entering we are instantly surprised with the size of the dinosaurs in the entrance hall. This museum is one of the largest natural history museums in the world and hosted the Night at the Museum movie in 2006. It features 46 exhibition halls, among the main attractions are skeletons of dinosaurs, mammoths and a blue whale. Being located right next to Central Park, on the opposite side of the MET, finishing the day with a relaxing stroll through this fantastic park will surely be a great idea.
