Com os raios de sol primaveris a espreitar, os dias tornam-se mais agradáveis para deixar as mantas e o sofá e esticar as pernas para fora de casa. Nesta altura do ano, os parques e jardins são uma agradável opção para caminhar, ouvir música, fazer uma leitura, simplesmente relaxar. Portugal apresenta um diversificado conjunto de jardins, públicos e privados, que valem a pena a visita. Muitos são espaços históricos, que agora se ligam à modernidade, mantendo o cariz social, onde grupos de amigos se encontram e convivem. Em alguns pode-se ouvir música nos típicos coretos ou saborear um gelado nos antigos quiosques. Fica a sugestão para esta Primavera.

Spring is coming and the sun starts to shine, the days become more pleasant to leave the blankets and sofa and stretch out your legs outside your home. At this time of the year, the parks and gardens are a pleasant option for walking, listening to music, doing a reading, simply relaxing. Portugal presents a diverse set of gardens, public and private, which are worth the visit. Many are historical spaces, which now connect with modernity, maintaining the social aspect, where groups of friends meet. In some you can hear music in typical bandstand, or savour an ice-cream in the old kiosks. Here is the suggestion for this spring.

Parque da Fundação Serralves, Porto

Espaço verde na cidade do Porto que une a natureza à arte, numa área que se estende por 18 hectares com 230 espécies de plantas espalhados pelo jardim, mata e quinta. O espaço é agradável para estar em contacto com a natureza e com a arte, pois dispõe de várias esculturas e do Museu de Arte Contemporânea, projetado por Siza Vieira. Este parque, juntamente com os jardins da Quinta da Regaleira, consta da lista dos 250 jardins mais notáveis do mundo, apresentados no livro “The Gardener's Garden”.

Green space in Porto that links nature and art, in an area that extends over 18 hectares with 230 species of plants spread throughout the garden, forest and farm. The space is pleasant as you can be in contact with nature and with art, as it has several sculptures and the Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Siza Vieira. This park, together with the gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, is included in the list of the 250 most outstanding gardens in the world, presented in the book "The Gardener's Garden".

Parque Infante D. Pedro, Aveiro

Também conhecido como o parque da cidade, apresenta um amplo espaço verde com lagos. Sendo um parque na cidade de Aveiro, não poderiam faltar um toque do movimento de Arte Nova, que se instalou na cidade no início do século XX e azulejos, também típicos da arquitetura regional. Assim, no jardim é possível encontrar um coreto de Arte Nova e alguns painéis de azulejos que retratam temas locais.  

Also known as the city park, it features an ample green space with lakes. Being a park in the city of Aveiro, it could not miss a touch of the movement of Art Nouveau, which settled in the city in the early twentieth century and also the tiles, typical of regional architecture. Thus, in the garden you can find an Art Nouveau bandstand and some tile panels that portray local themes.

Jardim Botânico de Coimbra

O Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra foi mandado construir pelo Marquês de Pombal em 1772 com o objetivo de complementar o estudo da História Natural e da Medicina. Hoje, aglomera uma rica coleção de árvores e plantas de todo o mundo que se estende por mais de 13 hectares.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra was commissioned by the Marquis of Pombal in 1772 to complement the study of Natural History and Medicine. Today, it congregates a rich collection of trees and plants from all over the world that extends for more than 13 hectares.

Jardim da Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra

Talvez o jardim mais romântico de Portugal, cuja Fonte das Lágrimas é o símbolo do amor trágico de Pedro e Inês. Segundo conta a História, no século XIV, D. Pedro, Príncipe Herdeiro do Trono Português, e D.ª Inês de Castro, aia castelhana da Princesa ali se encontravam secretamente. Tendo sido também ali que por ordem do Rei D. Afonso IV, D. Inês terá sido morta. Conta a lenda que no local onde Inês foi degolada, brotou uma fonte cujas águas têm origem nas suas lágrimas e o sangue do seu corpo mancharia para sempre as pedras da fonte. Ainda hoje, na Fonte das Lágrimas vê-se uma estranha mancha de algas avermelhadas na rocha. É possível também ver a Fonte dos Amores, envolvida pelos muros do Jardim Medieval. No Jardim Romântico, encontram-se espécies raras de árvores, algumas bem impressionantes.

Perhaps the most romantic garden in Portugal, whose Fountain of Tears is the symbol of the tragic love of Pedro and Inês. According to History, in the 14^th century, D. Pedro, Crown Prince of the Portuguese Throne, and D. Inês de Castro, Castilian maid of the Princess, met there secretly. It is also there that is said that D. Inês would have been killed by order of the king D. Afonso IV. The legend says that in the place where Inês was beheaded, a fountain rose whose waters originated in her tears, and the blood of her body would forever stain the stones of the fountain. Even today, in the Fountain of Tears, there is a strange patch of reddish algae on the rock. It is also possible to see the Fountain of Loves, surrounded by the walls of the Medieval Garden. In the Romantic Garden there are rare species of trees, some quite impressive.

Parque de Esculturas Contemporâneas Almourol, Vila Nova da Barquinha

Localizado em Vila Nova da Barquinha, junto ao Rio Tejo, apresenta um conjunto de esculturas contemporâneas de artistas portugueses, cujo trabalho se desenvolveu desde a década de 60 até à atualidade. Ganhou o Prémio Nacional de Arquitetura Paisagista em 2007 na categoria "Espaços Exteriores de Uso Público", da autoria da dupla de Arquitetos Paisagistas – Hipólito Bettencourt e Joana Sena Rego. Neste espaço existe também uma galeria de exposições, loja, ateliers artísticos, biblioteca, alojamento temporário para criadores, equipamentos desportivos, espaços lúdicos para as crianças e percursos ribeirinhos.

Located in Vila Nova da Barquinha, next to the Tagus River, it presents a set of contemporary sculptures by Portuguese artists, whose work developed from the 60's to the present. It won the National Prize for Landscape Architecture in 2007 in the category "Public Spaces for Public Use", by the duo of Landscape Architects - Hipólito Bettencourt and Joana Sena Rego. In this space there is also an art gallery, a shop, artistic ateliers, library, temporary accommodation for creators, sports equipment, play spaces for children and riverside paths.

Jardim Bacalhôa Buddha Eden, Bombarral

O Buddha Eden é o maior jardim oriental da Europa, sendo uma galeria a céu aberto com mais de 200 esculturas espalhadas por uma área de 40 hectares. Este jardim tem a particularidade de ter sido criado após a destruição dos Budas Gigantes de Bamyan, no Afeganistão em 2001, a fim de sensibilizar/colmatar um dos maiores atos de barbaridade cultural. Neste enorme jardim, podemos passear ao redor de budas gigantes, Guerreiros de Xian em Terracota, do Lago do Pagode, pela Escadaria dos Budas Dourados e pelo Jardim da Arte Moderna.

Buddha Eden is Europe's largest oriental garden, an open-air gallery with more than 200 sculptures spread over an area of 40 hectares. This garden has the particularity of having been created after the destruction of the Bamyan Giant Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001, in order to sensitize/fill one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity. In this huge garden, we can stroll around giant buddhas, Xian Warriors in Terracotta, Pagoda Lake, Stairs of the Golden Buddhas and the Garden of Modern Art.

Jardim da Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra

A quinta foi construída no século XX, com um estilo romântico com influência da corrente naturalista, tendo sido idealizada pelo arquiteto-cenógrafo italiano Luigi Manini. Célebre por contemplar elementos arquitetónicos e conceções maçónicas, da mesma fazem também parte jardins idílicos e intimistas compostos por uma mistura de plantas e árvores provenientes de várias partes do globo e vegetação autóctone.

The farmhouse was built in the twentieth century, in a romantic style influenced by the naturalistic current, designed by the Italian architect-set designer Luigi Manini. Famous for contemplating Masonic architectural elements and concepts, it also includes idyllic and intimate gardens composed of a mixture of plants and trees from many parts of the globe and autochthonous vegetation.

Jardim do Palácio de Monserrate, Sintra

Apesar de não terem a mesma fama do jardim anterior, no Palácio de Monserrate, também em Sintra, sentimo-nos envolvidos por uma mística romântica. O jardim exótico do Palácio apresenta, por exemplo, um Jardim do México com cerca de 5.000 metros quadrados com mais de 3.500 plantas importadas dos quatro cantos do mundo, que ali sobrevivem devido ao microclima de Sintra. Apresenta também outras plantas exóticas, um roseiral, cascatas e lagos.

In spite of not being as famous as the previous garden, in the Palace of Monserrate, also in Sintra, we feel surrounded by a romantic mystique. The Palace's exotic garden features, for example, a 5,000-square-meter Mexico Garden with more than 3,500 plants imported from the four corners of the world, which survive there due to the microclimate of Sintra. It also has other exotic plants, a rose garden, waterfalls and lakes.

Jardim do Museu da Cidade de Lisboa

O Jardim Bordalo Pinheiro fica junto ao Palácio Pimenta, atual Museu da Cidade de Lisboa, em pleno Campo Grande. Nos labirintos do jardim vais-te deparar com caranguejos, lagostas, sapos, peixes, cavalos-marinhos, caracóis, andorinhas, vespas, cobras e gatos, todas faianças estilo Bordalo Pinheiro, que recriam este jardim concebido por Joana Vasconcelos. O jardim do Palácio apresenta também uma área com lagos e pavilhões com exposições de arte.

Bordalo Pinheiro Garden is next to the Pimenta Palace, being currently the Museum of the City of Lisbon, at Campo Grande. In the labyrinths of the garden you will come across crabs, lobsters, frogs, fish, seahorses, snails, swallows, wasps, snakes and cats, all Bordalo Pinheiro style faience that recreates this garden conceived by Joana Vasconcelos. The Palace garden also features an area with lakes and art exhibitions.

Jardim Público de Évora

Este jardim público, como o nome indica, foi construído entre os anos de 1863 e 1867, tendo sido desenhado pelo arquiteto italiano José Cinatti. Nos 3,3 hectares que abrange, para além da variedade de plantas e árvores que tornam o ambiente um pouco mais fresco nos dias de calor alentejano, existe também um conjunto de monumentos de interesse cultural, como os restos da Muralha Medieval (século XIV), o Palácio de D. Manuel (século XVI), as Ruínas Fingidas (século XIX) e o coreto (século XIX). Por entre estes monumentos passeiam os pavões ali residentes.

This public garden was built between the years of 1863 and 1867, having been designed by the Italian architect José Cinatti. Besides the variety of plants and trees that make the environment a little cooler during the hottest Alentejo days, there are also a number of cultural monuments, such as the remains of the Medieval Wall (14th century), the Palace of D. Manuel (16th century), the Fake Ruins (19th century) and the bandstand (19th century). Among these monuments you can find the resident peacocks.

My Top 10 of Art Museums

São raras as viagens em que não entro num museu. Alguns dos destinos foram, inclusivamente, escolhidos devido a algum museu ou obra em particular que tinha bastante curiosidade em conhecer, como é o caso de Nova Iorque, Singapura, Bruxelas ou Amesterdão. Para além disso, normalmente gosto de aprender mais sobre a história e cultura locais. Procuro nomeadamente ficar a conhecer novos artistas e correntes inspiradas na cultura local. Entre as minhas preferências estão maioritariamente museus de arte moderna, como vais perceber a seguir. Deixo ficar o meu Top 10 de museus de arte, a escolha não foi fácil…

It’s hard to remember a trip which did’t include a visit to a museum. Some of the destinations were even chosen due to some museum or art work in particular that I was quite curious to know more about, as is the case of New York, Singapore, Brussels or Amsterdam. In addition, I usually like to learn more about local history and culture. In particular, I try to get to know new artists and art movements inspired by the local culture. Among my preferences are mostly museums of modern art, as you will notice next. I leave you with my top 10 of art museums, the choice was not easy at all...

1. Muséed’Orsay, Paris

O espaço do museu, por si só, torna-o especialmente encantador! Instalado na antiga estação de comboios da Gare de Orsay, na margem esquerda do Rio Sena (VII arrondissement), este museu alberga uma interessante coleção de arte, tanto de pintura como de escultura. As esculturas encontram-se expostas nos corredores centrais da “estação”, combinando perfeitamente com o estilo edifício do século XIX. Para além desta harmoniosa combinação que torna o ambiente do museu tão especial, a coleção de pintura, apesar de não ser tão vasta como a do Louvre, tem obras de alguns dos pintores de que mais gosto, tais como Degas, Renoir, Monet ou VanGogh. Do terraço é possível ter uma vista bonita sobre o Museu doLouvre através de um relógio enorme!

By itself, the space of the museum is especially charming! Housed the former railway station Gare d’Orsay, on the left bank of the River Seine (the VII arrondissement), this museum houses an interesting collection of art, both painting and sculpture. The sculptures are exposed at the main hall of the “station”, matching perfectly with the style of this building of the 19^th century. Beyond this harmonious combination that makes the museum environment so special, the collection of paintings, although being not as vast as the one of the Louvre, exhibits artworks by some of my preferred painters such as Degas, Renoir, Monet or Van Gogh. From the terrace it’s possible to have a beautiful view to the Louvre through a huge clock!

2. MOMA,New York

Museumof Modern Art, mais conhecido como MOMA, é um dos museus mais populares de Nova Iorque (NY). Este museu alberga uma rica coleção de arte, com cerca de 150 000 obras entre elas masterpieces como a "Persistência da Memória" de Salvador Dali, "Les demoiselles d'Avignon" de Picasso, "A noite estrelada" de Van Gogh, as "Latas de Sopa Campbell" de Andy Warhol ou um autorretrato de Frida Kahlo - uma loucura para amantes de arte moderna. Confesso que este foi um dos motivos que me levou até NY e passando mesmo lá o meu dia de aniversário.

Museumof Modern Art, known as MOMA, is one of the most popular museums in New York (NY). This museum has a rich art collection, it has about 150.000 artworks and among them, we can find masterpieces such as "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali, "Les Demoiselles d´Avignon" by Picasso, "The Starry Night" by Van Gogh, "Campbell´s Soup Cans" by Andy Warhol or a Frida Kahlo´s self-portrait - a madness for modern art lovers. I confess that this was one of the reasons that took me to NY and I I even spent my birthday there.

3. ArtScience Museum, Singapore

Este foi um dos museus que mais me surpreendeu! A começar pela sua estrutura exterior em forma de nenúfar, é um edifício que se destaca na baía de Singapura pela sua forma irreverente. Mas não só de fachadas e estruturas se faz um museu, a combinação da arte com a ciência na exposição permanente “Future World” é interessante, surpreendente e ao mesmo tempo divertida, sendo totalmente interativa. Desde os oceanos, passando pela cidade até ao espaço, as representações artísticas conjugadas com tecnologia despertam, captam e envolvem todos os teus sentidos. A exposição termina com a instalação “Crystal Universe” que é indescritível, penso que poderia passar lá horas. Neste museu deixas de ser um mero espectador, passando a interveniente da exposição.

This was one of the museums that surprised me the most! Beginning with its outer structure in the shape of a water lily, it’s a building that stands out in the Singapore’s bay for its irreverent architecture. But not only facades and structures a museum is made of, the combination of art and science in the permanent exhibition "Future World" is interesting, surprising and fun, being fully interactive. From the oceans, through cities and to the space, artistic representations combined with technology awaken, capture and envelop all your senses. The exhibition ends with the installation "Crystal Universe" which is indescribable, I think I could spend hours there. In this museum you aren’t just a mere spectator, you become the intervener of the exhibition.

4. Museu Reina Sofia, Madrid

Este museu reúne uma vasta coleção de obras de arte moderna e contemporânea de artistas espanhóis e internacionais. Localizado na capital espanhola, destaca clássicos de artistas nacionais como Dalí, Miró e Picasso, havendo várias salas totalmente dedicadas à obra-prima de Picasso, a imponente Guernica, que faz referência à guerra civil espanhola. Apesar de saber que esta é uma masterpiece, da primeira vez que a vi, não consegui deixar de ficar impressionada pelo tamanho e carga emocional da mesma. Quando regressei a Madrid fiz questão de lá voltar!

This museum has a vast collection of modern and contemporary works of art by Spanish and international artists. Located in the Spanish capital, it highlights classics by national artists such as Dalí, Miró and Picasso, with several rooms dedicated entirely to Picasso's masterpiece, the imposing Guernica, which refers to the Spanish civil war. Although I know that this is a masterpiece, the first time I saw it, I couldn’t help being impressed by the size and emotional burden of it. When I returned to Madrid I had to go back there again!

5. MET,New York

O Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), localiza-se mesmo junto ao Central Park, apresentando uma entrada em plena 5ª Avenida, sendo um dos museus mais importantes do mundo, quer pela quantidade como pela qualidade das obras-primas que expõe. Apresenta uma ampla coleção de arte, que compreende desde as civilizações antigas como Egipto e Grécia, a arte tribal da Oceânia, às obras impressionistas, como Degas ou Monet e arte americana dos séculos XVIII e XIX. O museu é tão grande que até um templo egípcio apresenta no seu interior. Este museu poderia levar semanas a ver, o visitante tem de assumir a difícil tarefa de selecionar os pontos a que quer dar destaque. Tentei dar prioridade à arte americana, uma vez que é de mais difícil acesso na Europa, e claro, não pude deixar de lado as grandes obras de pintores europeus do início do séc. XX, como as bailarinas de Degas e o autorretrato de Van Gogh.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) is located right next to the Central Park, featuring its main entrance at the Fifth Avenue, being one of the most important museums in the world, both for the quantity and quality of the masterpieces that it exhibits. It features a wide art collection, from the old civilizations such as Egypt and Greece, to the tribal art of Oceania, and to the impressionist masterpieces like Degas or Monet and American art from 18th and 19th centuries. The museum is so huge that even has an Egyptian temple in its interior. This museum could take weeks just to see it, however, I had the hard task of selecting the places I would like to go. I tried to give priority to the American art, once it is more difficult to access it in Europe, and of course I could not leave aside great masterpieces of European painters of the beginning of the 20th century, such as the ballet dancers of Degas and Van Gogh’s self-portrait.

6. Dalí Theatre Museum, Figueres

O facto do museu ter sido desenhado e concebido pelo próprio Dali, a partir do que restava do antigo teatro municipal, transporta-nos automaticamente para o seu mundo surreal. É uma experiência que vale a pena para quem gosta ou não da obra inigualável deste artista, genial a todos os níveis. O museu apresenta cerca de 1500 obras entre elas, pinturas, esculturas, desenhos, fotografias, mobiliários, objetos. Sendo a própria arquitetura e disposição do museu, uma das obras que por si só justifica a deslocação a Figueres. Mais recentemente, abriu também num edifício adjacente, a exposição de jóias desenhadas por Dalí, que pode ser visitada com o mesmo bilhete do museu.

The fact that the museum was designed by Dali himself, from what was left of the old municipal theatre, automatically transports us to his surreal world. It’s a priceless experience for those who like or not this artist's unequalled work, genius at all levels. The museum features around 1500 artworks among them, paintings, sculptures, drawings, photos, furniture, objects. Being the architecture and layout of the museum, one of the works that justifies the trip itself to Figueres. More recently, it has also opened in an adjoining building, the exhibition of jewels designed by Dalí, which can be visited with the same ticket of the museum.

7. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen

Localizado no coração de Copenhaga, este museu conquista os visitantes mal estes acabam de entrar, sendo os mesmos acolhidos num bonito jardim de Inverno. Nos espaços onde se encontra instada a coleção de arte, sala após sala, vais-te deparando com cerca de 10 000 obras de arte e objetos arqueológicos que ilustram 6 000 anos de história e cultura humana. Podes encontrar desde artefactos egípcios, gregos e de outras civilizações antigas, até à pintura francesa do século XIX.

Located in the heart of Copenhagen, this museum conquers the visitors just as they arrived, being welcomed in a beautiful winter garden. In the spaces where the art collection is set up, room after room, you will come across some 10 000 works of art and archaeological objects that illustrate 6 000 years of human history and culture. You can find from Egyptian and Greeks artefacts and other ancient civilizations, to the French painting of the 19^th century.

8. Pinakothekder Moderne, Munich

Pinakothek der Moderne, situado no quarteirão da arte em Munique, é considerado um dos maiores museus de arte moderna do mundo com obras de arte, arquitetura, design e ilustrações dos séculos XIX e XX. O conjunto de obras de artistas de renome mundial, bem como artistas alemães, encontra-se instalado num edifício de arquitetura modernista. Este museu apresenta também uma grande exposição dedicada ao design.

Pinakothek der Moderne, located at art’s quarter in Munich, is considered one of the largest museums of modern art in the world with art, architecture, design and illustrations of the 19^th and 20^th centuries. The collection of art works by world-renowned artists, as well as German artists, is housed in a building with a modernist architecture. This museum also features a large exhibition devoted to design.

9. National Gallery, London

Localizada na icónica Trafalgar Square, este é o principal museu de arte de Londres, apresentando um dos maiores acervos europeus de arte, com mais de 2,3 mil pinturas datadas desde o século XIII ao XIX. Entre elas, encontram-se alguns clássicos dos mestres Da Vinci, Botticelli, Monet, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Rembrandt, entre outros. As salas da galeria são em si também uma obra de arte.

Located on the iconic Trafalgar Square, this is London's premier art museum, featuring one of Europe's largest collections of art, with more than 2,300 paintings dating from the 13th to the 19th century. Among them are some of the classics of the masters Da Vinci, Botticelli, Monet, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Rembrandt, among others. The rooms of the gallery are also themselves a work of art.

10. Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique

Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, em Bruxelas, apresenta um museu de arte antiga (Musée d’Art Ancien) com obras dos séculos XV a XVIII, de mestres como van Dyck ou Rubens, e o museu de arte moderna (Musée d’Art Moderne), que expõe obras de correntes artísticas do século XIX até à atualidade. Nesse museu encontra-se exposto um dos principais motivos que me levou a Bruxelas: “A Tentação de Santo Antão” (1946) de Salvador Dali, o meu quadro favorito de sempre! Este conjunto de museus apresenta outros dois de dimensões mais pequenas dedicados a artistas belgas. No total possuem mais de 20 mil obras!

Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, in Brussels, features one ancient art museum (Musée d’Art Ancien) with artworks from the 15^th to 18^th centuries, displaying masters such as van Dyck or Rubens, and also the museum of modern art (Musée d’Art Moderne), which displays works from the artistic movements from the 19th to the present time. In this museum there is one of the main reasons that took me to Brussels: “The Temptation of St. Anthony” (1946) of Salvador Dali, my favourite painting of all! This set of museums features two smaller ones dedicated to Belgian artists. In total they have more than 20 thousand works!

Preço | Price: 8€ cada/each. Vale a pena adquirir o bilhete combinado destes dois museus com o Museu Magritte, mesmo ao lado, do qual também gostei muito. It’s worth buying the combined ticket of these two museums with the Magritte Museum, right next door, which I also really enjoyed.
