condiciona diretamente o seu presente, o que para quem chega, dá uma sensação
de regresso ao passado. Juntamente com a simpatia do povo cubano, cria um
ambiente que me faz considerar único no mundo. A trilogia de marca cubana é o charuto,

With 1250 Km
and 11,2 millions of inhabitants, Cuba is the 7th largest island in the world
and the largest in the Caribbean. The Cuban political history of the last
century directly conditions its present, which for those who have just arrived
gives a sense of return to the past. Together with the sympathy of the Cuban
people, it creates an environment that makes me consider it a unique country in
the world. The Cuban brand trilogy is the cigar, the rum and the coffee! For me
Art, Culture and Sympathy! I leave you with some tips to prepare your trip to
Cuba, by exploring its heart from Havana.

Como chegar | How to go
A partir de Portugal, tens voos charter no verão com destino a Varadero, com duração de cerca de 8
horas de viagem. Nas restantes alturas do ano terás de fazer escalas com voos
destinados a Havana. De Varadero para Havana demora-se cerca de 2 horas de
viagem em autocarro, incluindo paragem para a tradicional pinã colada.
No regresso vai com antecedência para o aeroporto, o processo de
check in e controlo de passaporte é lentíssimo! Estava a ver que perdia o
avião! Não é que me importasse =P
From Portugal,
you have charter flights at summer to Varadero, which will last about 8 hours.
At other times of the year you will have to make an indirect flight destined to
Havana. From Varadero to Havana takes about 2 hours by bus, including a stop
for the traditional pinã colada.
To the return
flight, you should go earlier to the airport as the process of check in and
passport control is extremely slow! For moments I thought I would miss my
flight! It's not that I would mind =P

Onde ficar | Where to stay
Em Havana gostei bastante do Hotel Iberostar Parque Central. Como
o nome indica, encontra-se localizado numa das praças centrais na cidade velha
de Havana. É uma delícia estar a tomar o pequeno-almoço a observar a
movimentação dos carros antigos pelas ruas. Tem uma piscina no terraço de onde
se tem uma vista esplêndida para a cidade e de onde podes ver o sol a
esconder-se no mar junto ao Malecón (Calçadão lá do sítio). O hotel encontra-se
instalado num antigo edifício colonial, completamente restaurado. Tens música
ambiente tocada ao vivo literalmente de manhã à noite! O que torna o ambiente
envolvente completamente embebido da cultura cubana, à qual não pode nunca
faltar a música! É algo incontornável!
Clima | Weather
Sendo um país sub-tropical, o clima é normalmente quente e húmido
durante todo o ano. A maior incidência da época ciclónica é entre setembro e
outubro. Faz sempre muito calor! A notícia boa é que a temperatura da água do
mar raramente desce abaixo dos 24ºC entre abril e dezembro.
Being a
sub-tropical country, the climate is usually hot and humid all year. The
highest incidence of the cyclonic season is between September and October. It’s
always very hot! The good news is that the seawater temperature rarely drops
below 24ºC between April and December.

As pessoas | People
Ouvi por lá alguém dizer: “Somos um país imperfeito, pobre e
bloqueado, mas resistente!”. Efetivamente o povo revela uma força, humildade e
alegria que sobressaem! Não me pareceu que estivessem ali para enganar o
turista, sentimento que te invade noutros pontos do globo. As pessoas parecem
revelar-se bastante cultas, não existindo analfabetos, sendo a educação
gratuita para toda a gente. Os ritmos quentes da música cubana enchem as ruas e
as casas em qualquer lado que vás! Aparentemente, a tristeza é ali impenetrável.
Contudo, por detrás disto sabes que a maioria do povo vive com um salário de 20
CUC (aproximadamente 20€), independentemente da sua profissão, e as suas
escolhas encontram-se limitadas àquela ilha. O que para alguns pode ser o
paraíso, para outros pode tornar-se num inferno... Vais ser confrontado com
vários sentimentos ambivalentes ao longo da tua estadia.
I have heard
someone saying that: "We are an imperfect country, poor and blocked, but
resistant!” Effectively the people reveal a strength, humility and joy that
stand out! It didn’t seem to me that they were there to deceive the tourist, a
feeling that pervades you at some other points of the globe. People seem to be
quite educated, there are no illiterates, and education is free for everyone.
The hot rhythms of Cuban music fill the streets and houses wherever you go!
Apparently, the sadness is impenetrable there. However, behind this you know
that most of the people live on a salary of 20 CUC (about 20 €), regardless of
their profession, and their choices are limited to that island. What for some
people can be paradise, for others it can become hell ... You will be
confronted with many ambivalent feelings throughout your stay.

Transportes | Transports
A rede de transportes públicos é desaconselhada a turistas, não há
metro na cidade, e os bus vão cheíssimos. Mas não é caso para stressar! Pelo
contrário, é sempre um enorme prazer chamar um táxi e poderes escolher entre um
descapotável rosa, azul ou vermelho! Uma corrida de táxi fica sempre a 10 CUC
pelo menos, dependendo da distância percorrida. Não há taximetro, por isso, no
regatear é que está o ganho! Convém acordar sempre o preço antes de entrar.
The public transport network is not recommended to tourists, there’s no metro in the city, and the buses are very crowded. But don’t worry! It’s always a great pleasure to call a taxi and choose between a pink, blue or red convertible! A taxi ride is at least 10 CUC, depending on the distance traveled. There is no taximeter, so in the haggling is the gain! It’s recommended to agree the price before getting in.

Existem também empresas privadas de passeios em carros antigos que
realizam
tours de 1 ou mais horas, sendo
uma boa forma para ficares a conhecer os pontos emblemáticos da cidade! Eu fiz
um passeio de 1 hora por 30 CUC e mais uma vez és tu que escolhes a viatura!
Não é fácil! E não te preocupes porque em princípio não ficas a pé, os carros
são antigos, mas têm motores novos. Tens também em Havana e Varadero os habituais autocarros
Hop On Hop Off de 2 andares, custam
cerca de 10 a 15 CUC por dia.
There are also private companies which sell rides in old cars that make tours of 1 or more hours, being a good way to get to know the emblematic points of the city! I took a 1 hour ride for 30 CUC and once again you choose the car! It's not easy! And don’t worry, the cars are old, but they have new engines. In Havana and Varadero you also have the usual 2-floor Hop On Hop Off buses, costing around 10 to 15 CUC per day.

Por Havana Velha andas bem a pé para todo o lado. Se quiseres
conhecer a parte nova da cidade, onde se encontra a famosa Praça da Revolução,
onde Fidel Castro fazia o discurso anual no dia 1 de janeiro, para cerca de 2 milhões
de pessoas, nesse caso tens de ir de carro. Para deslocações na ilha, as estradas não são as melhores, o que
leva algum tempo extra.
Planeia bem o trajeto que queres fazer.
At Old Havana
you can walk by feet to everywhere you want to. Regarding the new part of the
city, where is the famous Revolution Square, where Fidel Castro made the annual
speech on January 1 to about 2 million people, you have to go by car. For trips on
the island, the roads are not the best, which takes some extra time. Plan well
the route you want to take.

Quanto à gastronomia, devido à relativa escassez de produtos
próprios a cozinha cubana é relativamente pobre, tendo como base o arroz e o
feijão preto, por lá chamados
Mouros e Cristianos,
batata, yuca e carne, sobretudo porco e frango. A carne de vaca é escassa. Em
Cuba é proibido matar vacas sob pena de prisão, sendo consideradas animais
essenciais devido ao leite e seus derivados. Como pratos típicos tens a
ropa
vieja ou roupa velha, confecionada com carne desfiada cozinhada e bastante
tempero e a lagosta, que é cozinhada de todas as formas e feitios. Segundo os
preços que fui vendo, podes encontrar pratos deste marisco desde 10 CUC.
Regarding gastronomy, due to the relative scarcity of products, Cuban cuisine is relatively poor, based on rice and black beans, called Moors and Christians, potatoes, cassava and meat, mainly pork and chicken. Beef is scarce. In Cuba it’s prohibited to kill cows under penalty of imprisonment, being considered essential animals due to milk and its derivatives. As typical dishes you have “ropa vieja” (old clothes), made with shredded meat cooked and lots of seasoning and the lobster, that is cooked in all shapes and sizes. According to the prices that I've seen, you can find dishes of this seafood from 10 CUC.

Ora dadas as altas temperaturas, há que refrescar! Contrariamente
à gastronomia, as bebidas em Cuba merecem destaque. O rum encontra-se encontra-se omnipresente na base de qualquer cocktail. De entre os mais
procurados tens: as escolhas de Hemingway, que durante a sua estadia de 23 anos
em Havana, gostava de ir tomar um Mojito
no Bodeguita del Médio ou um Daikiri
no Floridita (6 CUC). Depois tens os famosos Cuba Libre e a Pinã colada
em todo o lado, e para não desidratares, bebe sempre muita, mas muita água
(Ciego Montero, marca única disponível)! Sumo de cana de açúcar está também
sempre presente, sendo a cana umas das principais produções da ilha! Tens
também a Tukola, refrigerante cubano que imita a Coca-Cola, que é raríssima
por aquelas bandas!
Given the high temperatures,
don’t forget to refresh yourself! In contrast to gastronomy, drinks in Cuba
deserve special mention. The rum is always on the basis of any cocktail. The
most popular are: Hemingway's choices, which during his 23-year stay in Havana,
liked to go drink a Mojito at Bodeguita del Medio or a Daikiri at Floridita (6
CUC). Then you have the famous Cuba Libre and Pinã Colada everywhere you go,
and in order not to dehydrate, always drink lots of water (Ciego Montero, the
only brand available)! Sugarcane juice is also always present, with sugarcane
being one of the main productions of the island! You also have Tukola, a
Cuban soda that mimics Coca-Cola, which is very rare there!

Onde comer | Where to eat
Como deves imaginar a oferta de restaurantes não é abundante como
noutros países, os negócios ali são controlados. Podes ir aos restaurantes dos
hotéis, que normalmente têm um espaço agradável, sendo a maioria localizado em
edifícios coloniais. Tens alguns restaurantes pela cidade, como El Templete, situado em frente ao porto, onde podes degustar de um
arroz de lagosta, ou La Dominica,
restaurante italiano perto da Catedral, Los
Nardos em frente ao Capitólio (refeições a partir de 15 CUC). Como alternativa tens os chamados Paladares, que são casas privadas onde as pessoas poderão ir provar
comida típica cubana, à mesa dos donos da casa.
As you can
imagine the amount of restaurants is not as much as in other countries, the
business there is controlled. For instance, you can go to the restaurants of
the hotels, which usually have a pleasant space, most of which are located in
colonial buildings. There are also
some restaurants around the city, such as El
Templete, located in front of the port, where you can taste a lobster rice,
or La Dominica, Italian restaurant
near the Cathedral, Los Nardos in
front of the Capitol (meals from 15 CUC). Alternatively,
there are the so-called Paladares,
which are private houses where people can go to taste typical Cuban food, at
the table of the owners of the house.

Segurança | Security
Os cubanos dizem que o seu país é o mais seguro da América e dos
mais seguros do mundo. Não me pareceu boato! De dia ou de noite, nunca me senti
ameaçada.
Cubans say
that their country is the safest in America and one of the safest in the world.
It didn’t sound like a rumor! Day or night, I never felt threatened.

Religião | Religion
Devido à colonização, a maioria da população associa-se à religião
católica. Referem que não há discriminação
religiosa, daí ser segundo eles, um país tranquilo e seguro.
Due to the
colonization, the majority of the population associates with the catholic
religion. They point out that there is no religious discrimination, hence Cuba is a quiet
and safe country.

Moeda e pagamentos | Currency and payments
Vigoram duas moedas, o peso (CUP) utilizado pelo povo cubano e o
peso convertível (CUC) destinado aos turistas. Este último não fica nada atrás
do Euro ou do Dólar, distinguem-se dos CUP pois são ilustradas com monumentos
nacionais, enquanto os CUP apresentam heróis nacionais e valem muito, muito
menos. Os salários são tão baixos que o povo que trabalha no sector do turismo,
acaba por ganhar um pouco mais com as gorjetas, por isso sentes sempre vontade
de contribuir. Não dês gorjeta em euros ou dólares, pois as moedas lá são
dificilmente cambiáveis nos bancos.
Relativamente ao câmbio, podes trocar dinheiro nas cadecas (lojas de câmbio locais) ou nos
hotéis. Esquece os cartões de crédito! Pagamentos quase exclusivamente em cash! Lembra-te que Cuba está parada no
tempo e está isolada do resto do mundo. Se tiveres um cartão visa talvez ainda
possas ter um rasgo de sorte, mas pelo que pude observar é raro e as comissões
são elevadas.
There are two
currencies, the peso (CUP) used by the Cuban people and the convertible peso
(CUC) destined for tourists. The last one doesn’t stay behind the Euro or the
Dollar, it’s disassociated from the CUP because it’s illustrated with national
monuments, while the CUP has national heroes and is worth much, much less.
Salaries are so low that the people who work in the tourism sector, end up
earning a little more with tips, so you always feel like helping. Don’t tip in
euros or dollars, because the coins there are hardly changeable in the banks.
Regarding the
exchange, you can do it in the cadecas
(local exchange stores) or in the hotels. Forget the credit cards! Payments are
almost made exclusively in cash! Remember that Cuba has stopped in time and is
isolated from the rest of the world. If you have a visa card you may have luck,
but from what I have observed it’s rare and the commissions are high.

Internet, mito ou realidade? | Internet, mith or reality?
Sim, ela existe! Para aceder à internet é necessário adquirir um
cartão, semelhante a uma raspadinha (1 hora por 2 CUC) e encontrares pontos de
wi-fi. Normalmente as redes mais fortes são mesmo nos lobbies e bares dos hotéis.
Podes ter sorte ou azar com a velocidade da mesma! Eu não me pude
queixar!
Yes, it’s
real! To access the internet you need to buy a card, similar to a scratch card
(1 hour for 2 CUC) and find wi-fi points. Usually the strongest net is in the
lobbies and bars of hotels. You can be lucky or unlucky with the speed of it! I couldn’t complain about it!

Toilets
Caso queiras utilizar a casa de banho, tens de ir munido com moedas,
seja ela pública ou privada (ex. Restaurantes ou cafés). Existe sempre uma
senhora encarregue de manter as casas de banho limpas e racionar o papel
higiénico, que é escasso.
If you want to
use the bathroom, wherever you go, you have to take with you coins, whether
it’s public or private (eg. restaurants or cafes). There’s always a lady in
charge of keeping the bathrooms clean and rationing the toilet paper, which is
scarce.

redondos. Contudo, alguns hotéis já apresentam a mesma voltagem que a Europa

plugs with 2 flat or round pins. Some hotels already have the same voltage as
Europe (220V) and adapted sockets. Ask before you go.
- No momento, já não é necessário pagar uma taxa de 25 CUC para
sair do país. At the moment, it’s no longer needed to pay a 25 CUC
TAX to leave the country.
