5 Beaches that you can’t miss this summer in Algarve

O verão está a aquecer e eu já não consigo pensar em mais nada se não na praia! Em Portugal, devido à longa costa litoral, não nos podemos queixar em termos de ofertas! Mas, praias de areia branca, com um vasto areal ou compartimentadas por falésias escarpadas, água bem azulinha e com uma temperatura qb, sol radioso dia sim, dia sim...  É o que podemos desfrutar quando escorregamos para o sul do país, até ao Algarve! Esta região não é só conhecida e explorada por nós, mas internacionalmente! Quando lá vamos é fácil nos esquecermos que afinal estamos em Portugal, pois ouvimos constantemente línguas estrangeiras ao nosso redor. Basicamente, não há quem lhe resista!

Summer is getting hotter and hotter, I can barely think of anything but beach! In Portugal, due to the long coast, we can´t complain about beach offers! But, white sandy beaches, with a wide sand or compartmentalized by steep cliffs, clear blue water and with a nice temperature, sunny weather every single day... That is what we can enjoy when we “slip” to the south of the country, to the Algarve! This region isn’t only known and exploited by us, but also internationally! When we get there, it’s easy to forget that we are in Portugal after all, because we are constantly listening to other languages around us. Basically, no one can resist it!

I’ll leave you with five beaches that nobody can miss this summer, or at least once in a lifetime!

Praia da Marinha, Lagoa

Considerada uma das melhores praias da Europa, a Praia da Marinha é conhecida pelas águas cristalinas rodeadas por falésias e rochas escarpadas que fazem lembrar elefantes e outras figuras que apelam à tua imaginação... Quem gostar de caminhar, no topo das falésias existe um caminho pedestre que liga as várias praias.

Considered as one of the best beaches in Europe, Praia da Marinha is known for its crystalline waters surrounded by cliffs and steep rocks that remind you of elephants and other figures that appeal to your imagination ... Those who like to walk on the top of the cliffs there’s a pedestrian path that connects the various beaches.

Praia dos Olhos de Água, Albufeira

Pela sua simplicidade de aldeia piscatória, esta é uma das minhas praias favoritas do Algarve. É também uma praia pequena, onde em plenos meses de verão e especialmente durante a maré alta é difícil arranjar espaço para a toalha. Mas em junho, está-se lá na perfeição! Tem as melhores bolinhas de berlim do Algarve para todos os gostos e feitios! Nutella, chocolate branco, avelã, baunilha, maçã-canela, morango... é só escolher!

For its simplicity of fishing village, this is one of my favorite beaches in the Algarve. It’s also a small beach, where in full summer months and especially during high tide it’s difficult to have some space for the towel. But in June, it’s perfect! It has the best berlin balls in the Algarve for all tastes and styles! Nutella, white chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla, apple-cinnamon, strawberry ... you just have to choose!

Praia de Dona Ana, Lagos

Considerada há uns anos a melhor praia do mundo, a esta pequena praia com arribas e falésias, não resta muito espaço na areia para um belo descanso de dia de praia... Foi recentemente sujeita a obras de alimentação artificial de areia que não a favoreceram muito… Mas a sua beleza não dá tréguas. É possível realizar aqui passeios de barco para ver as grutas e caves nas rochas (25€ cada barco).

Considered some years ago the best beach in the world, on this small beach with cliffs there’s not much space in the sand for a nice and relaxing beach day... It was recently subject to works of artificial sand that did not favor it much... But its beauty does not give truce. It’s possible to take boat trips here to see the caves and cellars on the rocks (25€ per boat).

Ilha de Tavira

Localizada a sul de Tavira, esta praia faz parte do Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. Apresenta um extenso areal, e como o nome indica, requer uma ida de barco para lá chegar, a partir  de Tavira ou do cais das Quatro Águas (1,50€ ida e volta). A ilha apresenta parque de campismo, vários restaurantes e outras instalações necessárias para assegurar o bem estar dos banhistas. Na ilha podes optar por ir para a praia ou ficar a relaxar no pinhal junto ao rio. 

Located in the south of Tavira, this beach is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It has an extensive beach, and as the name implies, it requires a boat trip to get there, from Tavira or the Four Waters pier (1,50€ two way tickets). The island features a camping site, several restaurants and other facilities necessary to ensure the well-being of swimmers. On the island you can choose to go to the beach or just relax in the pine forest by the river.

Praia do Barril, Tavira

Esta praia a poucos quilómetros de Tavira, próxima de Pedras D’el Rei, fica também na Ilha de Tavira, numa parte pantanosa da Ria Formosa. Tem a particularidade de não ires para a praia de barco, como na anterior, mas de comboio (cerca de 1,20€ por viagem). Uma antiga locomotiva puxa várias carruagens para quem quer desfrutar do sol nesta praia. Existem também vários restaurantes e outras instalações turísticas localizadas numa antiga armação de pescadores de atum. A praia está circundada por âncoras gigantes... o que lhe dá um toque ainda mais peculiar! É uma praia tranquila!

This beach is a few kilometers from Tavira, near Pedras D'el Rei, is also on the Island of Tavira, in a marshy part of the Ria Formosa. It has the peculiarity of not going to the beach by boat, as in the previous one, but by train (around 1,20€ one way). An old locomotive pulls several carriages for those who want to enjoy the sun on this beach. There are also several restaurants and other tourist facilities located in an old tuna fisherman's frame. The beach is surrounded by giant anchors ... which gives it an even more peculiar touch! It's a quiet beach!

Não muito distante de Bruxelas, a pouco mais de 1 hora de carro da capital da Bélgica, fica Bruges, uma cidadezinha medieval bem pitoresca. Pertencente à região de Flandres, foi em tempos um importante centro industrial e comercial na Europa. Fruto dessa prosperidade, mantêm-se hoje bonitos edifícios que preenchem as ruas da cidade. Para além disso, a cidade é atravessada por uma rede de canais de água, que torna o cenário ainda mais bonito! Mais uma Veneza!

Not very far from Brussels, just over an hour's drive from the Belgian capital, lies Bruges, a picturesque medieval town. Belonging to the region of Flanders, it was once an important industrial and commercial center in Europe. As a result of this prosperity, today beautiful buildings are maintained, filling the streets of the city. In addition, the city is crossed by a network of water channels, which make the scenery even more beautiful! It’s just another Venice!

O centro histórico é desde 2000 património mundial da Unesco. Como não é muito grande é passível de ser percorrido a pé ou se preferires de barco, pois dos canais também é possível ter uma perspectiva encantadora da cidade. Definitivamente, os passeios de barco pelos canais do Rio Dijver são uma boa aposta!

The historic center is since 2000 world heritage by UNESCO. As it isn’t very big, it’s possible to be wandered by walk or if you prefer by boat, which also provides an enchanting perspective of the city. Definitely, the boat trip throughout the channels of the River Dijver is a good choice!

Algumas das principais praças da cidade são Markt e o Burg. Mark, ou mercado, como o nome indica, é uma praça do século XIII, onde se realizava e ainda hoje se realiza o mercado. Nessa praça destaca-se o Belfort, um grande campanário com 83m. À sua volta, existem vários cafés nas casinhas típicas, onde é possível sentar, relaxar e admirar o movimento da cidade. Mesmo ao seu lado, o Burg é o antigo centro político e religioso de Bruges, onde fica o edifício da Câmara Municial (Stadhuis) e a Basílica do Sangue Sagrado (Heilig Bloed Basiliek), assim chamado por lá se encontrar guardado um frasco que dizem conter sangue e água do corpo de Cristo.

Some of the main city’s squares are the Markt and the Burg. The Markt, or the market, as the name suggests, is a square of the 13th century, where it was held and still today is held the market. At that square stands out the Belfort, a huge bell tower with 83m. Around it, there are many cafés on the typical little houses, where it’s possible to sit down, relax and watch the city’s movement. Right on their side, the Burg is the old political and religious center of Bruges, where is located the City Hall (Stadhuis) and the Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilig Bloed Basiliek), so called due to be stored there a bottle that is said to contain blood and water of the body of Christ.

O chocolate é também aqui uma iguaria! A Bélgica é um país bilingue, enquanto em Bruxelas se fala maioritariamente francês, em Bruges fala-se essencialmente flamenco. Boa sorte!

The chocolate is also here a delicacy! Belgium is a bilingual country, while in Brussels it’s spoken mostly French, in Bruges it’s spoken essentially flamenco. Good luck on that!
