Berlengas

A tumultuosa viagem de barco que separa a ilha das Berlengas de Peniche, não é desculpa para deixar de visitar esta reserva natural no Atlântico, considerada Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO desde 2011. As Berlengas são um arquipélago de grande beleza natural, constituído pela ilha da Berlenga Grande e recifes adjacentes, as Estelas e os Farilhões-Forcados, que fica a cerca de 10km a oeste de Peniche.

The tumultuous boat trip that separates the Berlengas island from Peniche is no excuse to not visiting this Atlantic nature reserve, considered a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011. The Berlengas are an archipelago of great natural beauty, consisting of the island of Berlenga Grande and adjacent reefs, the Estelas and the Farilhões-Forcados, which is about 10km west of Peniche.

Como chegar? How to get there?

As Berlengas são ilhas, logo ninguém escapa ao barco! O local de embarque é na Marina de Peniche, havendo várias empresas que fazem a travessia. A viagem dura cerca de 40 minutos (preço: 20€ ida e volta). Uma vez que o acesso à ilha está condicionado a 350 visitantes por dia, devido à sua condição de reserva natural, se planeias ir lá passar um ou mais dias, podes reservar o barco para garantires o teu lugar. Se fores de carro até Peniche, a marina de Peniche disponibiliza um parque de estacionamento pago que é bastante económico, um dia inteiro não chega a 2€. Um conselho: toma um comprimido para o enjoo antes de embarcares!

Berlengas are islands, so nobody can escape from the boat trip! The boarding is at the Marina of Peniche, having several companies that make the crossing. The biat (boat) trip takes about 40 minutes (price: 20 € round trip). Since the access to the island is conditioned to 350 visitors a day, due to its nature reserve status, if you plan to go there for one or more days, you can book the boat to guarantee your place. If you go by car to Peniche, the marina of Peniche offers a paid parking which is quite economical, a full day doesn’t reach 2 €. Just one tip: take a tablet for seasickness before you board!

O que fazer? What to do?

As Berlengas são uma reserva natural, por isso toca a desfrutar do que a natureza tem para nos dar!

Podes observar inúmeras gaivotas, galhetas, cagarras e outras espécies de aves marinhas. Se estiveres atento até encontras várias aves bebés. Tens sorte se não fores presenteado com as necessidades das centenas de gaivotas que habitam na ilha... é como passar por entre as gotas da chuva! As lagartixas de Bocage, mais conhecidas como sardaniscas, também abundam por aquelas bandas!

The Berlengas are a nature reserve, so let’s enjoy the best that nature has to give us!

You can watch many seagulls, Atlantic Cory's shearwater and another species of sea birds. If you pay attention you can even find several baby seagulls. You're lucky if you're not presented with the poop of the hundreds of seagulls that inhabit the island ... It's like passing through the rain drops! Bocage lizards also live there!

Para além da bicharada, podes também observar as formações geológicas da ilha resultantes da ação erosiva do mar. Existem passeios de barco pelas grutas com duração de cerca de 30 minutos, com o valor de 6€ por pessoa. Neste passeio podes avistar, por exemplo, a Gruta da Flandres, Cabeça do Elefante, Carreiro do Mosteiro, assim chamado pela antiga existência naquele sítio do Mosteiro da Misericórdia da Berlenga, fundado por Monges da Ordem de S. Jerónimo para apoiar vítimas de naufrágios habituais naquela zona (tentem não pensar nisto enquanto estiverem no barco). O mosteiro foi destruído por ataques de piratas. A Greta da Inês, formação assim chamada por ser o local escolhido pela primeira mulher na ilha, a usar fato de banho, de seu nome Inês, para apanhar banhos de Sol (esta e outras formações geológicas da ilha poderiam estar sinalizadas com uma bolinha vermelha). Durante o passeio passamos também pela Gruta Azul e pela Cova do Sonho, locais apropriados para a prática de mergulho devido à cor e transparência das suas águas.

Besides all these animals, you can also watch the geological formations of the island, resulting from the erosive action of the sea. There are boat trips through the caves lasting about 30 minutes, worth € 6 per person. In this tour you can see, for example, the Grotto of Flanders, Head of the Elephant, Carreiro do Mosteiro, so called by the ancient existence in that site of the Monastery of the Mercy of the Berlenga, founded by Monks of the Order of St. Jerome to support victims of usual wrecks in that zone (try not to think about it, while you are on the boat). The monastery was destroyed by pirate attacks. The Greta da Inês, so-called for being the place chosen by the first woman on the island, to wear a bathing suit, named Inês, to catch sunbathing (this and other geological formations of the island could be signalized with a red point). During the tour, we also go through the Blue Grotto and the Cova do Sonho, places suitable for diving because of the color and transparency of its waters.

Para mim, a principal atração da ilha é sem dúvida a paisagem deslumbrante para o Forte de São João Baptista, que combina o melhor da natureza com a obra do Homem. O Forte foi mandado construir em 1651 pelo rei D. João IV, dada a posição estratégica da ilha. Se o quiseres visitar, prepara-te para desceres mais de 200 escadas para lá chegares! Se tiveres preguiça, no regresso podes aproveitar e apanhar lá o barco para ver as grutas e pedir para te deixarem no porto... evitas assim de subir a enorme escadaria! No caminho pedestre para o Forte, passas pelo Farol do Duque de Bragança que não é possível visitar.

For me, the island’s main attraction is without any doubt the stunning view to the São João Baptista Fort, which mix the best of nature with the work of Man. The fort was built in 1651 by King João IV, given the strategic position of the island. If you want to visit it, get ready to go down more than 200 stairs! If you are lazy, on your return you can take the boat and see the caves and ask the crew to leave you in the harbor... this way you can avoid climbing the enormous staircase! On the pedestrian path to the Fort, you pass through the Duque de Bragança lighthouse that is not opened to visits.

Para quem gosta de caminhar, existem vários trilhos pedestres que permitem explorar a ilha. Não te esqueças de levar calçado confortável e protetor solar, uma vez que não existem propriamente passeios e sombras. 

Não podes ir embora sem dar um mergulho na pequena praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro. A água cristalina desta ilha é simplesmente tentadora! Transparente, azulinha, mas bem fresquinha (até demais!). A praia situa-se na enseada do cais marítimo, onde chegam os barcos de Peniche. É a única praia para banhistas na ilha, é pequena e podes não ter onde colocar a toalha, mas é impossível resistir!

For those who enjoy hiking, there are many walking trails in order to explore the island. Just don’t forget to take comfortable shoes and sunscreen, there aren’t actual sidewalks and shadows.

You can’t go away without giving a dive into the sea at the small beach of Carreiro do Mosteiro. The water is so clear that it’s simply tempting! Transparent, blue, but very fresh too much I’d say! The beach is located in the cove of the maritime pier, where the boats of Peniche arrive. It’s the only beach for bathers on the island, it’s small and you may not have anywhere to put the towel, but it’s impossible to resist!

Onde comer? Where can you have a meal?

A ilha apresenta dois restaurantes, mas os preços estão inflacionados. Se quiseres poupar nas refeições, apesar de não existir nenhum parque de merendas podes improvisar um piquenique, por exemplo na praia. Não existe multibanco na ilha, é caso para dizer que “quem vai para o mar avia-se em terra”.

The island displays two restaurants, but the prices are inflated. If you want to save some money on meals, although the island doesn’t have a real picnic area, you can improvise one, for example on the beach.  There are no such thing as ATM.

Onde ficar? Where to stay?

Se quiseres ficar pela ilha mais do que um dia, podes acampar no campismo local ou pernoitar na pousada instalada no forte.

If you want to spend one day or more in the island, you can camp on the local camping site or spend the night in the guesthouse located at the fort.
