O dia começou cedo, com deslocação de metro até
Lower Manhattan, zona onde nasceu Nova Iorque (NY) e floresceu em tempos o comércio na cidade. Fui até ao
cais de embarque para a Estátua da Liberdade (9h45 – 16h45) e
Ellis Island -
Museu da Imigração (9h30 - 17h15) situado em
Battery park, mas mesmo assim
não consegui evitar as longas filas para a bilheteira e para o barco. Os bilhetes para entrar e subir à estátua esgotaram durante a primeira hora do dia. Por isso aconselho a adquirir os bilhetes
online para evitar esta situação, caso a entrada seja um
must see para ti.
The day started early, with a metro trip to
Lower Manhattan, the place where New York (NY) was born and where the trade was
developed. I went to the boarding pier to Statue of Liberty (9h45 am – 4h45 pm) and
Ellis Island – Immigration Museum
(9h30 am – 5h15pm), located at Battery Park, and although I went early I could
not avoid the long queues at the ticket office and at the boat. The tickets to
enter and go up to the top of the statue had been sold out in the first hour of
the day. For that reason, I would advise you to get your tickets online to
avoid this situation, if this place is a must see for you.

Na zona de embarque é possível observar várias estátuas dedicadas aos imigrantes que deixaram
o velho continente em busca de uma vida melhor na América.
At the boarding zone it is possible to see many
statues dedicated to immigrants who had left the old continent in order to seek
a better life in America.

A "Esfera", escultura de Fritz Koenig, que se encontrava exposta no
World Trade Center, encontra-se agora também neste parque, enquanto memorial às vítimas dos atentados do 11 de Setembro.
The “Sphere”, sculpture by Fritz Koenig, which
was displayed at World Trade Center, can be found now at this park as a
memorial of the victims from September 11th attacks.

Após uma longa
espera de cerca de 2 horas cheguei à Ilha da Liberdade, também com uma vista
deslumbrante sobre
Manhatan. A visita é rápida alternando o olhar sobre a
paisagem da cidade e a senhora de verde. A icónica Estátua da Liberdade, projetada por Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, foi uma oferta de França ao povo americano.
After a long wait of two hours, I arrived at
the Liberty Island, which has a stunning view over Manhattan. The visit is
fast, alternating my eyes between the city landscape and the lady in green. The
iconic Statue of Liberty, designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, was a gift
from France to the American people.

Almocei junto à
Lady Liberty, num dos únicos restaurantes existentes na ilha. No regresso, o barco
pára em
Ellis Island, ilha onde fica o Museu da Emigração, eu optei por não sair
e ir diretamente para
Manhattan para dedicar a tarde à zona da baixa, onde se situa o
distrito financeiro e a zona do
Ground Zero.
I had lunch
near Lady Liberty in one of the few restaurants in the island. On the way back,
the boat stops at Ellis Island, the island where we can find the Immigration
Museum, I decided not to leave the boat and go directly to Manhattan in order
to spend more time in downtown, where is located the financial district and the
Ground Zero zone.

A tarde começou por um passeio por
Wall Street. O nome desta rua que hoje é conhecida como o coração financeiro de Ny, deve-se a um muro que antigamente existia para afastar os inimigos e os índios de
Manhatan. Nesta zona, atualmente é possível admirar o
edifício da Bolsa (New York Stock Exchange) que apresenta uma monumental fachada neoclássica e visitar o
Federal Hall (9h-17h), onde o Presidente
George Washington fez o seu juramento a 30 de abril de 1789. A Bolsa de NY encontra-se fechada ao público devido a questões de segurança.
My afternoon started with a walk at Wall Street, the name of this street
that nowadays is known as the financial core of NY, comes from a wall that used to exist to keep enemies and Indians
away from Manhattan. Currently, It is possible to admire in this place the New York Stock Exchange with a monumental neoclassic façade
and also visit the Federal Hall (9am
– 17pm) where the President George Washington made oath on 30th April 1789. The
New York Stock Exchange is closed to public due to security measures.

Perto desta zona encontra-se a
Trinity Church, uma igreja episcopal estilo gótico, que quase que é engolida pelos arranha-céus circundantes. Ao seu lado encontra-se um clássico cemitério americano, onde se encontram sepultados alguns cidadãos importantes de NY.
Near this zone you can find the Trinity Church, an episcopal gothic church,
which nearly gets swallowed by the skyscrapers that surround it. Next to it you
can contemplate a classic American cemetery, where many important NY citizens
are buried.

Na zona do
Ground Zero, o Memorial e Museu do 11 de Setembro são de cortar a respiração. No local das
duas Torres Gémeas encontram-se agora duas piscinas quadradas com uma cascata no centro que representam a perda das vidas e o vazio após os atentados. Neste local simbólico faz-se sentir um grande silêncio e clima de respeito pelas quase 2977 vítimas dos
atentados, cujos nomes se encontram gravados à volta de cada uma das piscinas.
At the Groud
Zero zone, the 9/11 memorial and museum are breathtaking. In the twin
towers zone, there are now two square pools with a waterfall on the center
representing the loss of life and emptiness after the attacks. In this symbolic
place there is a great silence and atmosphere of respect for the almost 2977
victims of the attacks, whose names are engraved around each pool.

Ao entrar no
museu (10h-18h), regressa-se pouco e pouco ao dia 11 de Setembro de 2001, sendo difícil
não reviver as imagens de terror que vimos em direto naquele dia que mudou o
mundo. O museu é impressionante, apresenta várias partes dos edifícios, incluindo
partes da zona de impacto dos aviões, o carro dos bombeiros,
escadas de fuga, alicerces, antenas de comunicações, entre outros. O museu dá
especial enfoque às vítimas, suas histórias de vida e ao terror vivenciados por
elas e suas famílias naquele dia. Existem várias salas interactivas com a
fotografia de cada vítima, sua história e objetos pessoais.
When entering the museum (10am - 6pm), we
return gradually to September 11th, 2001, being difficult not to
revive the images of terror that we saw live on that day that changed the
world. The museum is impressive, featuring various parts of the buildings,
including parts of the aircraft of the impact zone, the fire truck, escape
ladders, foundations, and communications antennas, among others. The museum gives
special emphasis to the victims, their life stories and the terror experienced
by them and their families on that day. There are several interactive rooms
with a picture of each victim, their story and personal belongings.

"Trying to remember the color of the sky on that september morning", instalação artística de Finch (2014) para assinalar as memórias e perceções do trágico acontecimento de setembro de 2001. A sua combinação com a frase imortalizada por Virgílio na Eneida "No day should erase you from the memory of time" trazem à memória de cada visitante as imagens e angústias daquele dia que mudou o mundo.
"Trying to remember the color of the sky on that september morning", artwork by Finch (2014) to mark the memories and perceptions of the tragic event of September 2001. Its combination with the sentence immortalized by Virgil in the Aeneid "No day should erase you from the memory of time" bring to memory of each visitor the images and anguish of that day that changed the world.

Nesta zona da cidade, ergue-se o edifício mais alto de
Manhattan (com 541m) - o
One World
Trade Center, também conhecido como
Freedom Tower (Torre da Liberdade), que voltou a alterar a paisagem de NY após a destruição das Torres Gémeas.
In this zone stands One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, as the highest building of Manhattan with 541m, and that changed again the city's landscape after the destruction of the Twin Towers.

Recentemente inaugurada junto ao memorial, encontra-se a estação de metro
Oculus, que
apresenta uma arquitectura única. Ao lado, no nº 1972 da Broadway fica a
Department Store Century 21, uma espécie de
outlet de grandes marcas, mas eu não gostei.
Recently inaugurated next to the memorial, you
will find the Oculus metro station, which presents a unique architecture.
Beside, at nº 1972 Broadway is the Department Store Century 21, a sort of
outlet for big brands, but I did not like it.

South Street Seaport é uma zona portuária que fica na zona adjacente ao distrito financeiro, que também seria uma zona agradável para um passeio, no entanto, já não tive oportunidade de passar por lá.
South Street Seaport is a port
zone adjacent to the financial district, and it is also a nice zone to go for a
walk, however, I did not have the opportunity to pass by there.
No regresso ao Hotel parei para
ver o famoso
Flatiron Building (cruzamento da Madison Av., a Broadway e 5ªAv),
conhecido pela sua forma semelhante ao um ferro de engomar,da autoria de Daniel Buunham, era o edifício mais alto do mundo quando foi concluído em 1902.
On the way back to the Hotel,
I stopped to see the famous Flatiron Building (intersection of Madison Av.,
Broadway with 5th Ave.), known for its iron-like shape by Daniel Buunham, it
was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1902.

Victoria’s Secret, uma
perdição! Na
Macy’s é possível ter um desconto de 10% em todos os artigos ao
apresentar o passaporte no balcão de informações.
Moving up a little further
to Broadway, at Herald Square, already with the Empire State as panorama, we can see the huge
departmental store Macy’s and one of the Victoria’s Secret shops, pretty hard
to resist! At Macy’s it is possible to have a discount of 10% in all articles
by presenting the passport at the information desk.
