No dia 4 de
outubro assinala-se uma data que passa à margem de muita gente. É o dia
internacional do animal, sabias? Pois é, atualmente existem dias para tudo e
mais alguma coisa, mas este parece-me relevante pela sua vertente de
sensibilização para proteção dos animais e preservação das espécies. Apenas uma
curiosidade, esta data foi escolhida de acordo com o dia do santo padroeiro dos
animais - S. Francisco de Assis.
Podemos parar e pensar sobre o papel que os animais têm vindo a desempenhar na humanidade ao longo dos séculos... Muitos são companheiros de casa ou de trabalho do Homem, auxiliando o desenvolvimento das culturas e sociedades, outros têm sido utilizados de forma cruel em prol do lazer das pessoas. Não precisamos de recuar muito no tempo para identificarmos algumas tradições ou rituais que envolvem maus tratos, sendo triste constatarmos que hoje continuamos a não respeitar a sua vida, como se de um objeto de lazer se tratasse.
Em Portugal, um passo importante no trato dos animais, passou pela inclusão de crimes e maus tratos contra animais de estimação no Código Penal português (Lei n.º 69/2014, de 29 de agosto), o passo seguinte seria expandir esta lei, pelo menos, no que diz respeito à utilização de animais para fins de espetáculos comerciais.
Da realidade portuguesa para o mundo, ao viajar percebes os diferentes papéis e estatutos que os animais desempenham, sendo o respeito pelos mesmos também uma variável cultural. De norte a sul, de este a oeste, tanto são considerados como o braço direito do Homem no seu trabalho diário, ou veículo de transporte, como entes queridos tratados quase como filhos ou mesmo adorados como deuses! Acima de tudo, qualquer que seja o seu papel ou função, de acordo com os meus valores, importa que sejam respeitados e atendidas as suas necessidades.

The meaning of the day 4th of October it’s not known for most
of people. It's the World Animal Day, did you know that? Yes, there are
currently days for everything, but this one seems to me relevant due to the sensitization
for protection of animals and preservation of species. Just a curiosity, this
date was chosen according to the day of the patron saint of animals - St.
Francis of Assisi.
We should stop and think about the role that animals have been playing
in humankind over the centuries ... Many are companion or work pals of Man,
aiding the development of cultures and societies, others have been used cruelly
for the sake of people's leisure. We don’t need to go back too far in time to identify
some traditions or rituals that involve mistreatment and it’s sad to note that
today we continue not to respect their lives, as if they were an object of
leisure.
In Portugal, an important step has been taken in the treatment of
animals. Crimes and mistreatment against pets have been included in the
Portuguese Penal Code (Law no. 69/2014, of August 29), the next step would be
to expand this law to what concerns to the use of animals for the purpose of
commercial goals.
From the Portuguese reality to the world, by traveling you can perceive
the different roles and statutes that the animals play, being respect for them
also a cultural variable. From north to south, from east to west, they can be
regarded as the right arm of man in his daily work, or transport vehicle, as
loved ones treated almost as children or even worshiped as gods! Above all,
whatever their role or function might be, according to my values, it matters
that their needs are respected and fulfilled.

A Índia é um
país de contrastes também no culto ao animal. As vacas são adoradas por serem consideradas
o veículo dos deuses na religião Hindu, são decoradas e intocáveis. Contudo,
passeiam pelas ruas e pelas estradas, podem aparecer no meio de uma autoestrada
e vês algumas super magras a comer nas pilhas de lixo que se encontram
acumuladas nas ruas das cidades. É difícil
compreender este paradoxo.
India is a country of contrasts also in animal worship. Cows are
worshiped as being the vehicle of the gods in the Hindu religion, they are
decorated and untouchable. However, they stroll the streets and the roads, they
can appear in the middle of a motorway and you see some super thin eating in
the piles of garbage that are accumulated in the cities’ streets. It’s
difficult to understand this paradox.

Animais de
companhia do Homem há séculos, têm vindo cada vez mais a ser integrados como
membros familiares nas várias culturas. No Japão, particularmente, vês muitos
cães de raça pequena que são tratados como autênticos bebés. Passeiam pelas
ruas em carrinhos e são vestidos como crianças. Não vi isto uma ou duas vezes,
mas em diversas cidades japonesas. Para além disso, no Japão vi também pessoas
a passear em cerimónias religiosas outros animais de estimação.
Man companions for centuries have been increasingly integrated as family
members in various cultures. In Japan, particularly, you see many small breed dogs
that are treated like babies. They walk the streets in stroller and are dressed
like children. I haven’t seen this once or twice, but in several Japanese
cities. In addition, in Japan I also saw people who take their pet with them to
religious ceremonies.

Os gatos nos

Em países de
tradição islâmica, como Marrocos e Turquia, vemos pelas ruas muitos gatos,
aparentemente bem cuidados. No Islamismo o gato sempre foi visto como uma
criatura pura, talvez por serem animais que apresentam muito cuidado com a sua
higiene e limpeza. Existem inclusivamente lendas sobre a relação de Maomé com
os gatos. Um ditado popular muçulmano diz: "Se tu matares um gato, vais
precisar construir uma mesquita para seres perdoado por Deus". Por outro lado, os cães parecem ser considerados
impuros.
In countries with an Islamic tradition, such as Morocco and Turkey, we
see many cats on the streets, apparently well-kept. In Islam the cat has always
been seen as a pure creature, perhaps because they are animals that are very
careful with their hygiene and cleanliness. There are even legends about Mohammed’s
relationship with cats. A popular Muslim saying says, "If you kill a cat,
you will need to build a mosque to be forgiven by God." On the other hand,
dogs appear to be considered impure.

na China | Birds in China
Ter um
passarinho fechado numa gaiola é contra natura, é certo... por isso em Hong
Kong e Macau, as pessoas levam a sua ave a passear até ao jardim. As pessoas
mais velhas, costumam passam algum tempo livre nos jardins públicos a
socializar e levam consigo as gaiolas para os passarinhos apanharem um pouco de
ar. Em Hong Kong existe mesmo um bird garden
(jardim para pássaros) - Yuen Po Street Bird Garden.
Having a bird in a cage is against nature, that's right ... so in Hong
Kong and Macao, people take their bird to the garden. Older people often spend
some free time in the public gardens in order to socialize, taking with them
the cages with the birds in order to get some fresh air). In Hong Kong there is
even a bird garden - Yuen Po Street Bird Garden.

Não há nada como
poder observar as espécies no seu habitat natural, tentando não interferir com
o seu meio e rotinas. Penso que os animais no Zoo sejam relativamente bem
tratados, mas já reparaste no olhar de um animal selvagem fechado numa jaula?
Uma espécie selvagem trancada, rodeada pelo olhar curioso das pessoas... Não me parece uma vida muito feliz...
There is nothing like being able to observe the species in their natural
habitat, trying not to interfere with their environment and routines. I think
the animals in the zoo are relatively well treated, but have you noticed the
look of a wild animal enclosed in a cage? A wild species locked, surrounded by
the curious look of people ... I don´t think that they have a very happy life...

In many cases, this partnership of millennia is currently used for commercial purposes, in this case through tourism ... Do companies take into consideration the respect and guarantee of the needs of the animals?
