Amesterdão atrai turistas de
vários pontos do mundo essencialmente por 3 aspectos: pelas tulipas que enchem
as ruas de cor, pela beleza da arquitectura das suas casas rodeadas por canais
e ainda pelo ambiente de tolerância e liberdade, associado à indústria do sexo
e legalização da cannabis. Amesterdão tem assim esta dupla faceta de beleza
& obscuridade que coexistem em harmonia e que tornam a cidade tão
especial.
Amsterdam attracts tourists from many points of
the world essentially due to 3 main aspects: the tulips that fulfill the
streets with color, the architectonic beauty of its houses surrounded by canals and the tolerance and freedom environment associated to the sex industry and cannabis
legalization. In fact, Amsterdam has this double side of beauty & darkness
that coexist in harmony and that make the city so special.

Estive em Amesterdão durante 3
dias, o que considero suficiente para quem pretender fazer uma visita panorâmica
da cidade. O centro da cidade de Amesterdão é compacto, sendo passível de ser
percorrido a pé, o que permite apreciar os pormenores das fachadas das casas
renascentistas à beira dos canais do Rio Amstel que preenchem a cidade e lhe
dão um toque tão especial. Se quiseres percorrer Amesterdão à moda holandesa,
aluga uma bicicleta e faz-te à estrada! Existem bicicletas em todos os cantos
da cidade, penso que fazem já parte da paisagem holandesa, tal como os moinhos!
Andar de bicicletas como os locais poderá ser uma experiência divertida! Eu não
arrisquei porque acho que não sobreviveria mais do que 5 minutos!
I stayed in Amsterdam for 3 days, which I
consider enough for those who intend to make only a panoramic visit of the
city. The center of Amsterdam is compact, you can make it walk by foot,
allowing you to appreciate the details of the facades of the Renaissance houses
on the banks of the canals of Amstel River that fill the city and give it
such a special touch. If you want to visit Amsterdam in a Dutch way, rent a
bike and get yourself to the road! There are bicycles in every corner of the
city, I think it made already part of the landscape such as the windmills. Riding
a bicycle like the locals could eventually be a fun experience! I didn’t do it
because I don’t think I would have survived more than 5 minutes!

Para ficares com uma perspetiva
panorâmica do coração de Amesterdão, para mim a melhor vista é precisamente dos
seus canais que são atravessados por inúmeras pontezinhas que ligam as
estreitas ruas da cidade. Ao deambular pela cidade percebes que algumas pessoas
vivem em barcos, não é fixe? Por isso, nesta cidade é quase obrigatório fazer
um passeio de barco pelos canais (cerca de 9€). Podes apanhar o barco mesmo em
frente à Estação Central, um imponente edifício neo-renascentista datado de
1889.
To have a panoramic perspective of Amsterdam,
for me the best view is precisely from its canals which are crossed by many
little bridges that links the narrow streets of the city. When wandering around
the city you can realize that some people live on boats, isn’t it cool? That’s
the reason why in this city it’s almost mandatory to take a boat trip through
the canals (about 9 €). You can catch the boat right in front of the Central
Station, an imposing Neo-Renaissance building dating from 1889.

Fruto da sua história enquanto
cidade portuária, Amesterdão apresenta uma longa tradição de tolerância
política e religiosa. Se por um lado é conhecida como a cidade que em 1850
apresentava cerca de 200 bordéis, por outro acolheu uma vasta comunidade
judaica que se mudou para a cidade no século XVII atraída pela sua tolerância.
Hoje apresenta assim várias igrejas católicas, protestantes e sinagogas, das quais destaco
a Sinagoga Israelo-Portuguesa.
As a result of its history as port city,
Amsterdam features a long tradition of political and religious tolerance. If on
one hand it is known as the city that in 1850 had about 200 brothels, on the
other hand it housed a vast Jewish community that moved to the city in the 17th
century attracted by its tolerance. Today, it presents several Roman Catholic and Protestant
churches and synagogues, of which I highlight the Israeli-Portuguese Synagogue.

O facto de nos dias de hoje
Amesterdão proporcionar em plena “praça pública” e à luz do dia uma oferta
legalizada de prostituição e de consumo de cannabis, que não se encontra em
qualquer outro canto da velha Europa, torna a cidade atraente para muitos
turistas. Este clima boémio e tolerância encontra-se intrinsecamente enraizado,
sendo por isso encarado com naturalidade. Particularmente na Red light, zona assim chamada pela luz
vermelha que ilumina as montras onde as prostitutas se expõem tentando atrair
os clientes, não vês apenas o estereótipo de mulher perfeita com tudo no sítio,
há opções para todas os gostos e orientações. A prostituição em Amesterdão data
do século XIII, e hoje apesar de ser legal e de sabermos que supostamente todos
os pressupostos jurídicos e de higiene estão assegurados, ao passar pelas ruas
não deixamos de ser confrontados por sentimentos ambivalentes. Sim, é a
profissão mais antiga do mundo, sempre existirá e ali apresenta todas as
condições para a sua realização, mas será que algumas das mulheres não poderão
estar a ser ainda exploradas? Como foram ali parar?
Nowadays the fact that Amsterdam provide a public offer of prostitution and cannabis use in the middle of the "public square" and in the light of day, which is not found anywhere else in old Europe, makes the city attractive to many tourists. This bohemian and tolerant climate is intrinsically rooted and viewed with naturalness. Particularly in Red light, a zone so called by
the red light that illuminates the windows where prostitutes expose themselves
trying to attract customers, you do not see just the stereotype of perfect
woman with everything on the right site, there are options for all tastes and
orientations. Prostitution in Amsterdam dates back to the 13th
century. Today, despite being legal and knowing that all hygiene
presuppositions are supposed to be guaranteed, we are confronted by ambivalent
feelings when we pass through the streets. Yes, it’s the oldest profession in
the world, it will always exist and there it presents all the conditions for
its realization, but aren’t some women still being exploited? How did
they get there?

As Coffee shops no centro de Amesterdão parecem sobretudo ser
frequentadas pelos turistas que querem experimentar e desfrutar do fruto que é
proibido na maioria dos seus países de origem. Também aqui a oferta parece ser
diversificada: podes escolher consumir no seu modo tradicional ou em bolos,
chocolates e outros doces. Só me parece arriscada a combinação de coffee shop e canal logo em frente! E se
pensas que as cofee shops são apenas
uma atração para turistas, enganas-te, porque a oferta estende-se a outros
pontos fora da cidade.
Coffee shops in the center of Amsterdam seemed
to be mainly frequented by tourists who want to try and enjoy the fruit that is
forbidden in most of their countries of origin. Also here the offer can be
diverse: you can choose to use on its traditional way or as cakes, chocolates
or other kind of candies. I only find the combination of coffee shop and
canal a kind of risky! And if you think that the coffee shops are just an
attraction for tourists, you will be deceived, because the offer extends to
other points outside the city.

Para além deste lado boémio,
Amesterdão é uma cidade apelativa para amantes de arte ou interessados por
história, nomeadamente da 2ª Guerra Mundial, tendo sido palco para
personalidades como Van Gogh, Rembrandt ou Anne Frank. Entre a vasta oferta de museus da
cidade, por exemplo dedicados ao Holocausto (ex. Joods Historisch Museum), à
droga (ex. Hash Marihuana Hemp) ou à tortura, destaco os três museus nacionais
de arte localizados no Bairro dos Museus. Estes são o Rijksmuseum que apresenta uma coleção de arte dedicada aos mestres
holandeses, o Stedelijk Museum
dedicado à arte moderna e contemporânea e o Van
Gogh Museum. Dada a limitação de tempo, dei preferência ao Museu Van Gogh
(Paulus Potterstraat 7/ aberto das 9h às 18h, e às sextas até às 22h). Este
apresenta a maior coleção do mundo de obras de arte referentes a este famoso
pintor holandês. Poderás encontrar fila, se quiseres mesmo visitar, pensa em
comprar o bilhete previamente pela internet. Após a visita ao museu podes ir
descansar um pouco no Vondelpark, localizado nas proximidades do bairro dos
museus.
Besides this bohemian side, Amsterdam is a very appealing city to art lovers or those who are interested in history, namely World War II, since it was the stage for such personalities as Van Gogh, Rembrandt or Anne Frank. Among the city's vast offer of museums, for
example dedicated to the Holocaust (eg. Joods Historisch Museum), the drug (eg.
Hash Marihuana Hemp) or torture, I highlight the three national art museums
located in the Museum Quarter. These are the Rijksmuseum which features an art collection dedicated to the Dutch
masters, the Stedelijk Museum
dedicated to modern and contemporary art and the Van Gogh Museum. Given the time
restriction, I preferred to visit the Van Gogh Museum (Paulus Potterstraat 7/
Open from 9 am to 6 pm, on Friday until 10 pm). This museum features the
biggest collection of the world of artworks from this famous Dutch painter. I
can find some queues, so if you really want to visit it, think of buying tickets
online previously. After the visit to the museum you can rest a little at Vondelpark,
located near the Museum Quarter.

A zona da cidade que mais gostei
foi sem dúvida o Jordaan. Bairro que
anteriormente era um sítio pobre e conhecido pelos seus hospícios, apresenta
hoje um ambiente boémio, com pitorescos canais, cafés e lojas vintage. A casa
de Anne Frank, onde esta e sua família se esconderam dos Nazis durante 2 anos
fica próxima desta zona. Mais uma vez a fila poderá ser grande, prepara-te! Por
esse motivo não visitei a casa-museu.
The area of the city I liked most was
undoubtedly the Jordaan. Formerly a
poor place known for its hospices, it has now a bohemian atmosphere with
picturesque canals, cafes and vintage shops. Anne Frank's house, where she
and her family hid from the Nazis for 2 years, is close to this area. Once
again the queue may be big, so get ready! For that reason I didn’t visit the
house-museum.

mercados coloridos que vendem de tudo um pouco, desde as famosas flores a
artigos vintage.

Efectivamente, no caso de
Amesterdão podemos dizer que apesar de ser uma cidade europeia, a viagem
proporciona uma experiência culturalmente rica que te abre a mente e que deixa
a questionar determinados valores e formas de estar!
In fact, in the case of Amsterdam we can say
that despite being a European city, the trip provides a culturally rich
experience that opens your mind and leaves you questioning certain values and
ways of living!

Uma vez que estive em Amesterdão
durante o outono, espero regressar à Holanda na primavera para conhecer o Keukenhof, o maior jardim da Europa que
fica perto de Lisse, e zonas mais rurais com os típicos moinhos!
Since I have been in Amsterdam on fall, I truly
hope to come back to The Netherlands on spring time in order to get to know the
Keukenhof, the biggest garden in
Europe that is close to Lisse, and go to the rural areas which have the typical
windmills.
