Finding the astonishing scenarios of Game of Thrones

Season 7 of Game of Thrones (GOT) is coming, and the fans of this HBO luxury TV series should be super excited, just like me! Since 2011, this series has created a lot of euphoria for the strong character of its characters, for the intensity of the story that seems a mixture of fiction and struggle at all costs for the power we see in the history of our world, but also for the beauty of the landscapes, which serve as the setting for each kingdom. The recordings of the various seasons have been made in several countries in order to show a greater realism to the warmer environment of King's Landing and the Free Cities, to the cold environment of Winterfell and the Wall. Over the past few years, I happened to be visiting some of the sites chosen for this series, such as Malta, Croatia and Spain. Do you recognize them?

Malta

Malta was one of the countries chosen in the first season to set the warmer scenarios of King's Landing and Pentos. Most of the shootings are made around the medieval city of Mdina, the old capital of Malta. For instance, the Gate of Mdina, appears when Catelyn and Rodrik Stark arrive in King's Landing. However this city is located in the interior of the island, far from the sea, so in the next seasons the shootings passed to Dubrovnik in Croatia, coast city surrounded by the Adriatic Sea.

In Attard, location near Mdina, The San Anton Palace, which is actually the official residence of the Maltese president, also appears as the scenario for the Red Keep where Arya has a fight with her sword Needle.

Also in season one, the Azure Window, a rock arch located in the coast of Gozo, an island that belongs to Malta, is seen during the wedding feast of Daenerys and Khal Drogo. Unfortunately this geological formation has recently collapsed due to the erosion during a sea storm.

Valetta, the current capital of Malta, city built in 1566 by knights (Saint John’s Knights of Jerusalem) to knights, was a long time ago known as the “Fortress town”. As the name shows and due to its strategic position, it presents around it and of the three surrounding cities several fortifications that appear in season 1. The Fort Ricasoli, which the gate was used to represent the Gate of the Gods of King's Landing; the Fort St Angelo, located in the town of Vittoriosa, whose dungeons have been the scenario of the Red Keep; The Fort Manoel, in the town Gżira, was the scenario to set the tragic public performance of Eddard Stark; and Fort St Elmo as Sowbelly Row.

Croatia

As of season 2, the filming of the streets of King's Landing, passed to the port city of Dubrovnik, Unesco World Heritage. This one presents a great medieval wall next to the sea, in the Dalmatian coast in Croatia, that seems to characterize well the description made in the books. In addition to the walls, some selected places to the scenarios was St. Dominic Street, located in the heart of the old city features narrow streets which have been used for numerous market scenes; the Stradun, the main street of Dubrovnik which is between Dubrovnik Cathedral and the Sponza Palace, it was where Cersei took her walk of penance in season 5; the Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old city; The Rector's Palace as a palace in Qarth; Minceta Tower, the highest point in Dubrovnik was used for the House of the Undying in Qarth in season 4; Fort St. Lawrence; Fort Bokar and Gradac Park, location of the Purple Wedding feast, which takes up in the season 4, when Joffrey died.

Several other locations in Croatia nearby Dubrovnik were also used, for King’s Landing, Qarth and Slaver's Bay. For example, during season 2, Lokrum Island, located just off-shore from Dubrovnik, was used for scenes that take place in Qarth and the Walls of Ston, dating back to the 14th century, was part of King’s Landing scenario.

Spain

More recently in seasons 5 and 6, and in the long awaited 7th season, some of the scenarios were recorded in medieval and islamic heritage places in neighboring Spain, more precisely in Andalusia, Catalonia and Extremadura.

Shame! Shame!

In season 6, the history center of Girona, in Catalonia, was the scenario to King’s Landing e Braavos. Namely, the exterior of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona was used for the Sept of Baelor in King's Landing; the exterior of the current archaeological museum and the Sant Pere de Galligants Abbey were used for Arya and The Waif confrontation on a Braavosi Bridge; the streets of Ferran el Catòlic, Sant Martí and l’Escola Pia were used for Braavosi Street Markets and Plaça dels Jurats for the Braavosi Theater Stage. When I was coming down the enormous staircase of the cathedral I could almost hear shame! Shame! Shame!
