Summer in the lands of Game of Thrones

Passado um mês de Game of Thrones ter terminado, porque não aproveitar o verão para viajar até aos locais de algumas das filmagens para nos ajudar a fazer o luto? No mapa de Game of Thrones, nem todas as terras pertencem ao norte de Westeros. Muitas das paisagens foram filmadas em terras quentes, que servem de cenários a Kings Landing ou reinos para lá do Narrow Sea, que separa Westeros de Essos. Nas duas publicações que fiz sobre as localizações de filmagem desta série, apresentei alguns dos cenários gravados em Malta, Croácia, Espanha e Islândia. Nesta, vou dar destaque a Marrocos e a outros locais também na Croácia.

After a month  of the ending of Game of Thrones, what about traveling this summer to the locations of some of the shooting places of this series to help us to do our mourning? In the Game of Thrones map, not all lands belong to the north of Westeros. Many of the landscapes were filmed in warmer lands, which serve as scenarios of Kings Landing or kingdoms beyond the Narrow Sea, which separates Westeros from Essos. In the two post I made about the filming locations of this serie, I presented some of the scenarios hosted in Malta, Croatia, Spain and Iceland. On this one, I will highlight Morocco and other places also in Croatia.

Duas das três cidades da Baía dos Escravos foram filmadas em cenários marroquinos. Ait Benhaddou, cidade fortificada que surge como uma miragem aos pés do Atlas, serviu de cenário a inúmeros filmes. Entre os mais conhecidos estão, por exemplo, o Gladiador (2000) ou A Múmia (1999). Na série da HBO, este cenário que faz parte da lista de património da Unesco desde 1987, encarnou as cidades de Yunkai e de Pentos.

Two of the three cities of Slaver's Bay were filmed in Moroccan settings. Ait Benhaddou, a fortified city that emerges as a mirage on the foot of the Atlas, has served as the setting for countless films. Among the best well known are, for example, Gladiator (2000) or The Mummy (1999). In the HBO series, this scenario that is part of Unesco's heritage list since 1987, incarnated the cities of Yunkai and Pentos.

Não muito longe desta cidade, com casas de barro e Kasbahs típicos da zona sul de Marrocos, podes encontrar outro ponto de filmagem. Na cidade de Ouarzazate, que é a sede do famoso estúdio de cinema Atlas, foram também filmadas algumas imagens do porto de Pentos, uma das cidades livres. Estas duas cidades ficam numa antiga rota comercial que ligava Marraquexe ao deserto. Porque não aproveitar a viagem para fazer isso mesmo? 

Not far from this city, with mud houses and typical Kasbahs from the south of Morocco, you can find another point of filming. In the city of Ouarzazate, which is home of the famous Atlas film studio, were also shot some images of the port of Pentos, one of the free cities. These two Moroccan cities are on an old commercial route that linked Marrakesh to the desert. Why not take advantage of sim the trip to do this?

Das paisagens áridas do deserto, para a costa junto ao Atlântico, Essaouira foi escolhida para cenário da cidade portuária de Astapor, a cidade dos Unsullied, também pertencente à Baía dos Escravos. Astapor foi onde Daenerys comprou o seu exército e se começou a preparar para a conquista dos sete reinos.

From the arid landscapes of the desert to the Atlantic coast, Essaouira was chosen for the scenery of the port city of Astapor, the city of the Unsullied, also belonging to the Slaver’s Bay. Astapor was where Daenerys bought her army and began to prepare for the conquest of the seven kingdoms.

A terceira cidade da Baía dos Escravos foi filmada na Croácia. A beleza desse país conquistou os realizadores desta série. Vários cenários que deram vida ao mundo de GOT foram ali captados, desde a 2ª temporada. Nesta publicação, vou-me centrar na zona de Split, a segunda maior cidade da Croácia. A Fortaleza de Kliss ou o que sobrou dela, localizada a cerca de 20 minutos a norte de Split, serviu de cenário exterior para Meereen, desde a 4ª temporada. Para te deslocares até lá, podes apanhar o autocarro público nº22 (13 HRK cada viagem, menos de 2€), perto do teatro de Split até Kliss. A fortaleza fica entre as montanhas de Mosor e Kozjak, proporcionando uma vista imensa sobre Split e a costa do Adriático. A fortaleza pode ser visitada das 9 às 19 horas e a entrada custa 60 kunas (cerca de 8€).

The third city of the Slaver’s Bay was filmed in Croatia. The beauty of this country has conquered the directors of this series. Several scenarios that gave life to the world of GOT have been captured there, since the second season. In this post, I will focus on the Split area, the second largest city in Croatia. Kliss Fortress or what's left of it, located just 20 minutes on the north of Split, served as an outdoor setting for Meereen, since Season 4. You can take the public bus nº22 (13 HRK each trip, less than 2 €), near the theatre of Split to Kliss. The fortress lies between the mountains of Mosor and Kozjak, providing an immense view of Split and the Adriatic coast. The fortress can be visited from 9 am to 7 pm and admission fee is 60 HRK (around 8 €).

Na cidade de Split, o Palácio do imperador romano Diocleciano, considerado património da Unesco, foi utilizado para vários interiores de Meereen. Na 4ª temporada, por exemplo, foi utilizado para a sala do trono de Daenerys, as caves do palácio para passagens subterrâneas de Meereen e catacumbas onde os dragões estavam fechados. Split cedeu também o seu centro histórico, para recriar Kings Landing, juntamente com a belíssima cidade muralhada de Dubrovnik.

In the city of Split, the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, considered a Unesco heritage, was used for several interiors of Meereen. In Season 4, for example, it was used for the throne room of Daenerys, the Diocletian's palace cellars for underground passageways in Meereen and catacombs where the dragons were closed. Split also ceded its historic center to recreate Kings Landing along with the beautiful city of Dubrovnik.

A cerca de 30 minutos de bus (nº23) ou a uma hora de barco de Split, encontras outro local de filmagens em Trogir. Esta é uma cidade costeira medieval com uma arquitetura veneziana, que se encontra também na lista de património da Unesco. Ali foram realizadas filmagens no Mosteiro dominicano para a cidade comercial de Qarth.

About 30 minutes by bus (nº23) or 1 hour by boat from Split, you will find another shooting place in Trogir. This is a medieval seaside town with Venetian architecture, which is also on Unesco's heritage list. There were filmed scenes for the commercial city of Qarth at the St. Dominic Monastery.

Ficamos a aguardar pela já anunciada prequela. Esperemos que desta vez, não seja tão superficial, como as duas últimas temporadas da série, que após temporadas de uma história surpreendente e que nos prendeu ao ecrã, ficaram aquém das expetativas.

Now, we are waiting for the already announced prequel. Let's hope that this time, it won’t be so superficial, as the last two seasons of the series, which after seasons of surprising story that attached us to the screen, fell short of expectations.

Game of Thrones, in the land of fire and ice

Na Islândia não é preciso ficar à espera que o Inverno chegue para ver Game of Thrones (GOT). São várias as paisagens, de costa a costa da Islândia, que serviram de cenário para a série da HBO, pela qual ficámos 2 anos à espera da 8ª e última temporada, que agora está prestes a terminar. Não é de estranhar que as paisagens da Islândia tenham sido escolhidas para cenário desta série. Ao percorrer as estradas de país, parecia que a qualquer momento iria chegar a Winterfell ou deparar-me com a muralha. Para além disso, a Islândia é conhecida como a terra do fogo e do gelo (Land of fire and ice), por coincidência ou não, a obra de George R. R. Martin que deu origem à serie, chama-se precisamente “A Song of Ice and Fire”. Curioso? Se tem ligação ou não, não sei, mas é um facto que os parques naturais e glaciares da Islândia representam na perfeição os cenários gelados e por vezes inóspitos desta história. Muitos dos cenários que representam as paisagens a norte da muralha foram filmados assim na Islândia. Nesta publicação vou destacar algumas das paisagens da Islândia que podemos encontrar ao ver a série. Saliento que cada uma delas é mais do que um simples cenário de GOT, ali a natureza fala por si mesma.

In Iceland, there’s no need to wait for the winter to arrive to see Game of Thrones (GOT). There are several Icelandic coast-to-coast landscapes that have been chosen for the setting of HBO series, for which we have been waiting for two years the 8^th and final season, which is now about to end. It is not a surprise that the landscapes of Iceland have been chosen for the setting of this series. When you drive in the country roads, it seems that at any moment you could reach Winterfell or encounter the Wall. In addition, Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice, coincidentally or not, the book of George RR Martin, that gave rise to the series, is called precisely "A Song of Ice and Fire". Curious? I really don’t know whether it has a connection or not, but it’s a fact that Iceland's natural parks and glaciers perfectly represent the icy and sometimes inhospitable scenarios of this story. Indeed, many of the scenarios representing the landscape in north of the wall were filmed in Iceland. In this post, I will highlight some of the landscapes of Iceland that we can find in this Tv series. I emphasize that each one of these landscapes is more than a simple scenario of GOT, it’s the nature speaking for itself.

Comecemos o nosso roteiro perto da capital. Não longe de Reikjavik, no circuito do Círculo Dourado podemos encontrar alguns cenários. Thingvellir, parque natural com características tectónicas e vulcânicas únicas, foi considerado Património da Humanidade em 2004, devido à sua importância cultural, geológica e histórica. Foi ali fundado o primeiro parlamento do mundo no ano de 930 D.C. Para além disso, este parque apresenta uma beleza incrível, composta por campos de lava, ravinas, cascatas e o maior lago natural do país, Þingvallavatn. Também é ali que a placa tectónica Norte Americana se separa da placa da Eurásia, encontrando-se a Islândia sobre duas placas tectónicas diferentes. 

Os caminhos existentes entre fendas enormes e as bonitas paisagens deste parque foram aproveitados para imagens do Norte de Westeros. Almannagjá gorge, um canyon perto da cascata Oxararfoss, foi utilizado para caracterizar a Bloody Gate, entrada para Eyrie, por onde passaram personagens como Catelyn Stark, Littlefinger e Sansa, e mais tarde Arya e the Hound.

Let's start our tour near the capital. Not far from Reikjavik, in the Golden Circle circuit we can find some scenarios. Thingvellir, a natural park with unique tectonic and volcanic features, was considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, due to its cultural, geological and historical importance. It was there founded the first parliament of the world in the year of 930 A.D.. In addition, this park has an incredible beauty, with lava fields, ravines, waterfalls and the largest natural lake in the country, Þingvallavatn. It’s also there that the North American tectonic plate separates itself from the plate of Eurasia, being Iceland set on two different tectonic plates.

The paths between huge cracks and the beautiful landscapes of this park were used for images of North of Westeros. Almannagjá gorge, a canyon near the Oxararfoss waterfall, was used to characterize the Bloody Gate, the entrance to Eyrie, where some characters like Catelyn Stark, Littlefinger and Sansa, and later Arya and the Hound, passed by.

A Islândia é conhecida pelas suas magnificas cascatas. Seria um desperdício não aproveitar algumas das 10 000 existentes. Skogafoss, foi uma das eleitas. Surge na 8ª temporada, quando Jon Snow e Daenerys voam juntos de dragão pela primeira vez. Esta cascata fica na costa sul da Islândia, na estrada que segue até Vik. É de fácil acesso e pode subir-se uma escadaria até ao topo da mesma.

Iceland is known for its magnificent waterfalls. It would be a shame (shame, shame) not to include some of the 10,000 Icelandic waterfalls. Skogafoss, was one of the elected. It comes on Season 8, when Jon Snow and Daenerys fly dragons together for the first time. This waterfall is on the south coast of Iceland, on the road to Vik. It’s easily accessible and you can climb up a huge staircase to the top of it.

Continuando até à pequena cidade de Vik, no sul da ilha, pode-se parar na famosa praia de areia preta e colunas de basalto, Reynisfjara. Esta surge na 7ª temporada como Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, uma cidade portuária onde os Selvagens vão negociar com os homens da Night’s Watch e onde Jon Snow desembarca antes de se aventurar pelas terras a norte da muralha.

Continuing our way to the small town of Vik, located in the south of the island, you can stop on the famous black sand beach and basalt columns, Reynisfjara. This place comes on Season 7, as Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, a port city where the Wildlings used to deal with the men of Night's Watch and where Jon Snow lands before venturing into the lands in north of the wall.

Na costa oeste, na península de Snaefellsnes, fica a montanha mais fotografada da Islândia – Kirkjufellsfoss. Também ela é figurina em diversas cenas, nomeadamente, coberta de neve na 7ª temporada, sendo chamada de “Arrowhead mountain”.

On the west coast, on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, is the most photographed mountain in Iceland - Kirkjufellsfoss. It’s also a figurine in several scenes, namely, covered in snow in season 7, being called the Arrowhead mountain.

Para aproveitar bem as paisagens geladas que caracterizam a série, muitos dos cenários foram filmados no norte da ilha. Infelizmente não tive oportunidade de conhecer a costa norte. Ficará para um tour pela Ring Road.

To take full advantage of the icy landscapes that characterize the series, many of the scenarios were filmed in the north of the island. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to know the north coast. Maybe someday I will return to do all of the Ring Road. Even if you aren’t a fan of this series, if you are passionate about nature, Iceland should definitely go to your travel list. If you want a guide or tour operator to explore this country, I recommend you to visit the website www.glacialexperience.is. Visited countries from A to almost Z

The world painted by Littlelle chegou à sua publicação nº 100! Quando eu era miúda, na escola, costumávamos assinalar cada lição nº 100 com uma pequena festa. Bem, aqui não vou dar uma festa, mas gostava de a assinalar de algum modo. Decidi, portanto, fazer estatística, ou melhor, um balanço contabilizando o que ficou para trás e o que ainda está para vir. Comecei por fazer uma lista dos países a que fui e em cada um deles que cidades ou localidades que visitei. Cada um está associado a recordações, acontecimentos em diferentes fases da minha vida. Em cada um deles aprendi coisas diferentes e algumas delas contribuíram para a pessoa que sou hoje. Tentei registar apenas uma recordação de cada lugar, o que se revelou uma tarefa difícil, já que poderá ser redutor escolher uma única recordação. Por isso, registei a primeira memória que me veio à mente, não sendo por isso a melhor, pior ou mais relevante. As minhas memórias e o conhecimento e sabedoria associados a cada país fazem parte da minha história, da história das suas gentes e da história do mundo, tal como ele é.

The world painted by Littlelle has reached its 100^th post! When I was a kid, at school, we used to sigh each lesson number 100 with a little party. Well, I'm not having a party here, but I'd like to highlight it somehow. I decided, therefore, to make some statistics, or rather, a balance accounting for what was left behind and what is yet to come. I will begin by making a list of the countries to which I went and in each of them what cities or localities I visited. Each one is associated with memories, events at different stages of my life. In each of them I learned different things and some of them contributed to the person I am today. I tried to register only a memory of each place, which proved to be a difficult task, since it might be reductive to choose a single memory. So, I registered the first memory that came to my mind, not being the best, the worst, or the most relevant. My memories and the knowledge and wisdom associated with each country are part of my history, the history of its people and the history of the world, just as it is.

1. Austria

Uma recordação: Na despedida de solteira da minha amiga Dídia, gritar pelas ruas de Ravello, na Costa Amalfitana, “Eco la sposa” para que ela, a usar um vestido feito com rolos de papel higiénico, passasse e fosse aplaudida por turistas e locais pelas ruas.

A memory: At my friend Dídia's bachelor party, I shouted through the streets of Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast, "Eco la sposa" so that she, wearing a dress made with rolls of toilet paper, could pass by and be applauded by tourists and locals through the streets.

Regressaria para: Percorrer o parque Cinque Terre, conhecer Portofino e Dolomites. Passear de barco na zona dos lagos no norte do país. Nadar em Capri e em Positano. Passear pelas ruas de Alberobello. Passear de carro pelos campos da Toscânia.  

I would go back to: Visit Cinque Terre, Portofino and Dolomites. Do a boat trip in the lakes in the north of the country. Swimming in Capri and Positano. Stroll through the streets of Alberobello. Drive by the Tuscan countryside.
